Notes:
In this slender, brightly colored work, Mara Pinti, Naata Nungurrayi uses her signature pointillism and visual rhythms to tell the story of the Pintupi women’s pilgrimage during the Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime). The center of the work is composed of a series of concentric circles, symbolizing water sources and ritual sites, and the surrounding radial tracks depict the sacred paths of female ancestral spirits through the desert. The dense overlap of red ochre, orange, off-white and purple pink in the image makes the entire painting full of primordial energy. It is both a spiritual map and a schematic record of ancestral knowledge. Each cluster of dots not only has formal beauty, but also acts as a carrier of oral tradition, passing on the history of the group, the memory of the land and the myths of the ancestors.
