  • Notes: Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi is an Indigenous Australian artist born in Iltuturunga renowned for being one of the founders of Papunya Tula Artists in the early 1970s. Integral to the Pintupi-language culture, the Tingarri style painting which Tjungurrayi is known to have pioneered, is characterised by roundels with layers of concentric circles joined by dotted travelling lines. They symbolise the travels of ancestral beings across the desert landscape, depicting sacred geographical connections.

Capturing the essence of Tingarri style, this visually striking work is composed of alternating bands of white, black, and earth tone, each uniformly dotted with synthetic polymer paint. As Indigenous Australians consider the practice of painting spiritual, the process would likely have been accompanied by the singing of traditional chants.

Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi’s remarkable composition of Tingarri cycles offers a profound meditation on the sacred journeys of ancestors, the interconnectedness of land and spirituality, and the enduring traditions of the Pintupi people. His works are held in esteemed national collections, including the National Gallery of Australia and National Gallery of Victoria.
