  • Notes: Yeo Shih Yun’s Freedom(2015) is part of her evocative Conversations with Trees series, a collaborative and contemplative project in which the artist relinquishes control and embraces nature as co-creator. Created using silkscreen ink on linen, this large-scale abstract composition is rooted in an experimental process where tree branches, dipped in ink and stirred by the wind, generate spontaneous marks. These delicate yet vigorous gestures—seemingly calligraphic, organic, and chaotic all at once—are captured and layered to form a visual language that is both primal and poetic. The result is a work that feels alive, its textures breathing with the movement of wind, branch, and time.

Freedom embodies Yeo’s enduring interest in the mystical and impermanent qualities of drawing. As part of an exhibition first shown at Esplanade’s Jendela Visual Arts Space in 2011 and later at the Singapore Art Museum in 2012, the series combines drawings, photographs, films, silkscreen paintings, and video installation to explore the invisible dialogue between artist, nature, and chance. By attaching ink-dipped brushes to trees across Singapore, Yeo redefines authorship and challenges conventional notions of intentionality. The act of creation is surrendered to the rhythm of the natural world, transforming trees into agents of mark-making and blurring the boundary between the human and the elemental.

In this collaborative process, Freedom becomes more than a painting—it becomes an imprint of time, weather, and motion. Its visual complexity and layered abstraction speak to both the unpredictability of nature and the meditative act of observation. The viewer is invited not only to engage with its surface but also to reflect on the philosophical depth of its making. In Yeo’s practice, the very act of creation is a celebration of unpredictability, serendipity, and the sublime. Freedom, like the series it belongs to, is ultimately an ode to nature’s silent yet expressive force and a poetic investigation into the shared authorship of art and environment.
