Notes:
"Blooming" is a representative and important work in the early "Female Body" series by Chinese contemporary sculptor Xiang Jing. The statue depicts a standing female nude in a near-life-size proportion, with a firm and restrained posture, arms drooping, and a calm expression on her face with a subtle detachment and questioning. Her body is like a flower that is about to bloom but is frozen in time and space, facing the viewer directly and forming its own entity.
The work is cast in bronze, with a slightly dull texture on the surface, which enhances the coldness and simplicity in her sculptural language. Unlike the idealization of the female body in Western classical sculptures, Xiang Jing highlights an undecorated, slightly "clumsy" sense of reality and presence in this work. This "non-performativeness" of the body has become her core way of communicating with male-dominated art history and gender concepts. "Blooming" is not only a formal sculpture exercise, but also an inner declaration about individuality and self, gender and existence. It marks an important step for Xiang Jing from an academic background to an independent contemporary sculptural language.
