Awardee of the Cultural Medallion in 2006, Tan Choh Tee is a distinguished second-generation Singaporean artist renowned for his vibrant renditions of still life and nostalgic Singaporean landscapes in oil. Marked by meticulous spatial composition and interplay of light, his realist-impressionist style roots deeply in his Chinese ink painting training at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), where he studied under Chen Wen Hsi and the other representatives of Nanyang Style.
Set against the backdrop of Singapore's rapid urbanisation and kampung resettlements in the 1970s, this lot captures a picturesque memory, conveying the artist’s sentiment for the vanishing kampung way of life. Focusing on quotidian scenes, it portrays residents engaged in domestic chores, attap houses, woven bamboo crafts, and a rhythmically layered tree line rendered in soft yet luminous tones that evoke an idyllic impression. This stands in stark contrast to Singapore’s contemporaneous leap toward a hyper-modern urban landscape. As a devoted practitioner of en plein air painting, Tan emphasizes architectural details to shape spatial ambience, offering viewers a crystallized moment in time; his works thus serve as an artistic antidote to the relentless pace of urban transformation.
