Notes:
I Nyoman Gunarsa is one of the key founders of Indonesian contemporary art. He is known for his deep Balinese traditional roots and modern artistic language. "Bali Dancer" was created in 2005, during the mature phase of the artist’s career, and fully demonstrates his refined sensitivity and precise ability to capture dance, movement, and national spirit.
The painting characterized by unrestrained lines and bright, lively colors. The dancers appear graceful and focused, as if performing in a sacred ceremony, evoking an atmosphere of near-religious ritual. Gunarsa does not aim for realistic depiction, but instead emphasizes the rhythm of dance and the freedom of the soul through abstract color blocks and expressive brushstrokes.
The medium of watercolor on paper further enhances the work’s fluidity and transparency, making the dancers seem to merge with the surrounding atmosphere—imbued with poetry and spirituality. In the interplay of shifting light and shadow, the mystery and spirituality of Balinese culture are transformed into a modern visual language, becoming a bridge between tradition and the contemporary.
This work is large in scale and rich in composition. It stands as a representative watercolor masterpiece from the artist's later period, showcasing his eclectic style and enduring love for local culture. It holds significant value for both collectors and art researchers.
- Condition: The work overall is in good condition. No sign of restoration and retouching on this work. The canvas is in good condition. The work is framed with handcrafted frame
