"Fake Humans", Indonesian artist Gusmen Heriadi constructs a chaotic and distorted human landscape with strong visual impact and a highly symbolic visual language. This piece was created in 2000, a period when Southeast Asian society was undergoing drastic transformation and reconstruction. Heriadi condensed his deep reflections on "distorted human nature," "social masks," and "moral alienation" into this painting, using manic colors and a densely packed composition.
At the center of the picture are multiple deformed figures, rendered with rough textures, grotesque postures, and exaggerated, distorted facial features, as if locked in an endless state of conflict and struggle. Through primitivist brushstrokes and vivid color contrasts, Heriadi intersperses cold blues and greens with violent reds, black ink, and earthy oranges, heightening the visual tension and psychological dislocation. The faces of many characters no longer bear individual expression but instead serve as projection symbols of societal pathologies—violence, desire, absurdity, and hypocrisy intertwined.
The upper area is filled with floating limbs, screaming mouths, abstract gestures, and deformed beasts, forming a stream-of-consciousness "inner human landscape" that reveals Heriadi's deep concern with the fragmentation of the soul. He critiques not only specific political systems or social classes, but also offers a broader warning about "human disguise" and the potential collapse of civilization.
