Fang Xiang’s "Under the Bridge" elevates the image of the traditional Jiangnan water town into a visual chant of dreams and memories, using an extremely dense picture texture and fairy-tale-like poetic brushstrokes.
At the center of the composition, an ancient arch bridge crosses the scene diagonally. It serves not only as the core of the architectural structure but also as a metaphor for the transition of time and space—a visual passage. A light boat floats beneath the bridge, with a pedestrian in white and a child under a bamboo awning forming a central group of contrasting motion and stillness. The lotus beside the boat, though withered, retains its elegant form; petals drift in the air, as if symbolizing the alternation of spring and autumn and the passage of time. The entire work reconstructs a childhood-imagined garden space through complex colors and interwoven lines, with layered depth and a balanced sense of movement and calm.
A closer look at the bridge deck, stone walls, window frames, and surrounding flora reveals Fang Xiang’s characteristic meticulous brushwork and folk decorative style. His technique of "fine brushwork and colored ink" is seamlessly fused with "situational narrative," creating an image realm that is at once traditional and imbued with contemporary aesthetics.
