Notes:
In this work created in 2007, Xiong Yu constructed a surreal dream scene with a highly symbolic visual language. The whole painting is based on gray and white, and the dense flowers and trees in the background are spread like snow, creating a hazy and poetic atmosphere. On the right side of the picture, a delicate face emerges in the sea of flowers, and its gaze is calm and alert, while the neck of the figure twists and extends like a wisp of black smoke, blending into the dark picture structure. On the left, a quiet horse head appears in an almost phantom-like posture, as if looking at the figure from a distance, full of psychological tension. In the whole composition, the man, horse, and flowers are both related to each other and isolated, exuding a strange sense of tranquility and distance, symbolizing the alienation in the spiritual space, the interweaving of subconsciousness and dreams.
Xu Zi's work combines the metaphorical spirit of symbolism, surrealism and oriental aesthetics. He is good at integrating figurative forms into absurd and poetic contexts, leading the viewer into inner self-reflection during the viewing process. The ambiguous relationship between the characters' faces and the environment makes this painting not only visually appealing, but also has a profound psychological dimension.
The work is ingeniously conceived and skillfully painted, representing the artist's exploration of "sense of existence" and "human boundaries" in his mature period, and fully demonstrates his unique artistic world.
