  • Notes: As one of the most representative artists in the history of modern Malaysian painting, Chia Yu Chian's works are known for their delicate observation of local life and distinctive personality. "My Village" was created in 1957, at the beginning of the artist's return from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, showing his deep affection for local themes and the establishment of his early personal style. With heavy brushstrokes, expressionistic composition and highly saturated colors, the work depicts a part of a tropical village: traditional wooden houses, market vendors, women holding utensils, and palm trees swaying in the wind, outlining the simple and vibrant daily scenes of Nanyang society. A multi-layered visual effect is formed between the center and the foreground of the picture, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in it.

During this period, Chia Yu Chian was deeply influenced by the Cubism and Fauvism painting styles he had encountered in Paris, and at the same time insisted on examining local life through a "Malaysian lens". "My Village" is an iconic work that integrates Western modernist narrative with the reality of Southeast Asian life.
