Notes:
In Cheong Soo Pieng's rich and diverse artistic language, scenes of water villages always take up a significant place. "Boat on the River" depicts a tranquil and poetic riverside village, where muted hues and refined brushwork join to create a dreamlike spatiality, synchronously tangible and detached, as if it is a fragment of memory.
Layered in structure, the upper part of the painting features houses clustered along a slope, where lines are interlaced horizontally and vertically, evoking an abstract visual effect, with simplified buildings and trees forming into geometric order; the lower part transitions into the realm of water, where boats drift lazily, figures sit and recline, revealing the vitality of life. Cheong skillfully employs contrasts of density and void, leaving an ethereal blank to the water surface, thus forming a rhythmic contrast with the dense structure on the shore.
Notably, Cheong Soo Pieng weaved the technique of pointillism, enriching the surface with effects that shimmer with tonal variation. This approach combines the poetic sense of Eastern ink painting and the texture of Western printmaking. With minimalist strokes, he captures profound humanistic sensibilities: the resonance between man and nature, life and environment, imbuing a warmth of time in silence.
This lot stands as a vivid embodiment of Cheong Soo Pieng's "Neo-Eastern Painting" vision. He not only inherits the tradition of Chinese landscape and figures, but is also deeply inspired by the relationship between modernist plane composition and color. The ambiance between abstraction and representation in the work invites endless contemplation, which leads to the enduring appeal of his oeuvre among collectors and scholars alike.
- Condition: This work overall is in good condition. No apparent traces of restoration and retouching on this work.
