  • Notes: In "Two Currents", Indonesian contemporary artist Budi Kustarto explores the relationship between body, identity, and social gravity in a visually impactful way. The work depicts a man's body twisted and hanging upside down in the center of the picture. His limbs are full of tension, as if he is struggling or dancing, while his face presents a cold gaze, forming strong emotional and psychological tension. The picture uses a monochrome cold tone to create a feeling of suspension, alienation, and even weightlessness.

The artist reverses our habitual understanding of gravity and perception through the detailed portrayal of the figure and an extremely unusual compositional perspective, which metaphorically represents the swinging and uncertain state of individuals within the social structure. The "inversion" of the figure is not only a formal twist, but also a conceptual challenge: How do we perceive "normality"? Are we driven by some invisible force?

Budi Kustarto is an important representative of the new generation of conceptual art in Indonesia and is known for engaging in social critique through the body and symbolic composition. "Two Currents" is a representative work that combines surreal aesthetics and psychological tension, revealing the contradictions, struggles, and breakthroughs faced by individuals in the context of globalization.
