Notes:
Thai artist Thongchai Srisukprasert is renowned for his ritualistic and spiritual "Rice" series. His works combine traditional Thai decorative elements, Buddhist philosophy, and modern compositional aesthetics, presenting a solemn and refined visual language. "Rice No. 5", as one of the key works in this series, depicts the form and imagery of rice in an almost sacred manner, reflecting the artist’s profound contemplation on the "origin of life."
The work features four rice pods rendered in gold and black tones, centrally arranged against an intricately decorative background. The pods have soft, dynamic contours, with edges adorned by elegant and intricate golden patterns that echo the aesthetic heritage of traditional Thai motifs. One of the pods is cut open, revealing a swirling vortex of rice grains within—resembling the eye of the universe—symbolizing the cosmic cycle of gestation, reincarnation, and infinite life.
The artist blends gold foil and acrylic to create a warm glow and solemn texture, evoking a meditative atmosphere reminiscent of a mandala. This work is not merely a depiction of an object, but a spiritual representation of rice as a symbol of life, culture, and faith.
Rice No. 5 is one of Srisukprasert's significant works from his mature period in the early 2000s. It reflects his distinctive style of integrating religious symbolism, natural forms, and ornamental structure. The piece has been exhibited in both Thai and international art exhibitions and is highly regarded by collectors. It stands as a compelling example of Southeast Asian contemporary art, rich in local spirit and formal innovation.
- Condition: The work is overall in good condition. No sign of restoration and retouching on this work. The work is framed.
