Notes:
“On the surface it seems I am analyzing and questioning "mundane life" using ordinary subjects. But the truth is that I am generalizing very subjective, intimate and memory-based subject-images only as metaphors and support to build up my painting.”
Born in 1951 in Yugoslavia, Milenko Prvacki is considered one of Singapore's foremost art educators having taught at LASALLE College of the Arts since 1994. He obtained a Master of Fine Arts (Painting) from the Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest, Romania. He also founded Tropical Lab, an art camp that hosts international students from institutions and art colleges worldwide to facilitate creative exchange and cultural sensitivities.
The works in this lot is part of a Trophy Landscape series, which he produced from the late 1980s to early 1990s. He embraced neo-expressionist elements, substituting his earlier rawness and brutality for more vibrant and smoother compositions. To him, painting is a continual process of reinvigorating in “attempting to touch the truth,” and he conceptually challenges the limits of representations and abstractions through figurative depiction or otherwise. His meditation into the realm of instincts and contemplation through brushstrokes forces one to reflexively question how meanings are made through visual language.
He has exhibited internationally with solo shows in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney and Jakarta, as well as group shows held at the Museum of Modern Art in Antwerp, Belgium, the Torrance Art Museum in Los Angeles and the Sydney Biennale, Australia. Notably, he is a recipient of the prestigious Cultural Medallion for Visual Arts in Singapore in 2012 and was conferred the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government. His work is in numerous private and public collections, such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia; Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade, Serbia; Singapore Art Museum, National Gallery Singapore amongst others.
