In this painting, "Maniac for Money No. 1", Lincoln Townley captures the crazy face of contemporary capital desire with his highly recognizable visual language. The violent and sculptural brushstrokes abstract the face into an explosion of emotions, and the dense and thick layers of oil paint pile up a complex psychological picture of roaring, greed, distortion and anxiety. The golden background flashes with cold light, echoing the "money temptation" it symbolizes, making the viewer visually shocked and unable to avoid the disturbing reality. Lincoln Townley is famous for his "psychological portraiture" series, exploring the faces of celebrities, financial elites and marginalized people between desire and fear.
