  • Notes: “I have reached the moment in my life where I don't want to hold on to tradition. I want my work to speak a universal language, the language of abstraction. It is a language that everyone can relate to, no matter where he or she.” - Lim Tze Peng

In 1949, Lim embarked on a teaching career at Xin Min School, eventually becoming its principal in 1951, a position he held until his retirement in 1981. Upon retiring, he dedicated himself fully to his passion for art, capturing the essence of contemporary calligraphy and Singapore's transforming cityscape. Charting yet another artistic breakthrough around 2005, Lim experimented with a new signature Chinese calligraphy style with abstracted penmanship – a signature he termed as ‘hutuzi’ (糊涂字; also known as ‘muddled writing’) that prioritises elegance, flow and visual expressiveness.

We are honoured to present this masterful work by Lim Tze Peng, which is particularly noted for its commemorative value. Penned on his 100th birthday, the word ‘Jing’ is laid at the heart of the work connoting serenity and contemplation. This work by the luminary centurion speaks of his ardent dedication to the age-old medium of classical Chinese calligraphy and may be translated as the artist’s mental clarity and stillness amidst the ever-changing contemporary landscape.

Throughout his illustrious career, Lim received numerous accolades, including the Cultural Medallion in 2003 and the Meritorious Service Medal in 2016, cementing his foremost position in Singaporean art. His works have been exhibited internationally, notably in the ongoing “Becoming Lim Tze Peng" (2025) at National Gallery of Singapore and "Soul of Ink: Lim Tze Peng at 100" (2021) which celebrated his centennial year.
