Notes:
Kwon Ki Soo’s representative figure Dongguri floats on a red lake surrounded by ripples, amidst highly decorative flowers and tree trunks composed of blocks of color. This scene blends a fairy-tale dreamscape with urban sensuality, presenting a contemporary Korean aesthetic full of tension and visual delight.
This work uses bright red as the dominant tone, conveying a mood of quiet anticipation through layers of silver ripples. Dongguri, always smiling, expresses the artist’s philosophical reflections on seeking inner purity and hope within a complex reality. In terms of technique, Kwon Ki-soo merges traditional East Asian totemic motifs with the formal language of pop art, employing flat painting, repetition, and minimalist black-and-white figures to create a distinctive fusion of Eastern and Western visual elements.
