Ketna Patel, a British-born artist deeply influenced by the cultural integration of South and Southeast Asia, explores modern Asian life in her iconic "Immigrant Series" where identity, consumer culture and colonial heritage intersect. "Asian in the Shade" is a visually rich and colorful work that cleverly blends pop culture, street scenes and historical symbols.
In the picture, a woman in a swimsuit and holding a paper umbrella stands smiling, with the background of a typical hand-painted advertising wall in Singapore's Little India district, accompanied by bright Tamil text and folk deity images. Opposite her is a man wearing long sleeves and a bamboo hat, whose back and shadow create a metaphorical dialogue between culture and class. Elements such as the collage-like tile pattern on the ground, the neon pink door panels on the wall and the bicycle together construct a familiar and surreal urban style.
Patel is known for her social collage, which uses the technique of layering images for social observation, challenging the immigrant experience, cultural identity and the impact of globalization through bright images. This work is not only a visual feast, but also a contemporary allegory about the construction and transformation of Asian identity.
This work has been exhibited in many important exhibitions in Singapore and London. It is also a representative work of Patel's mature style in the mid-2000s, with high collection value and academic significance.
