JOEL WELBART BARTOLOME《

  • Notes: Filipino artist Joel Velbart Bartolomé is known for his strong visual style of critical realism. He is good at using symbolic and theatrical images to deeply question social structure, collective consciousness and individual destiny. "Closing Time" was created in 2010. It is the artist's heavy response to industrialized society, human alienation and spiritual dilemma, and is also one of his representative political allegorical paintings.

In the center of the picture, a row of naked men climb the falling rope in different postures, with a dull industrial plant and billowing black smoke in the background, and the sunset is dim in the haze. They wear masks symbolizing "silence", their bodies twisted and struggling, as if in an endless escape or passive rise, metaphorically representing the struggle of human nature in modern society that is suppressed by the system, consumer culture or industrial process. Above the picture, a green decorative curtain symbolizing "nature and dreams" hangs, and a female face with closed eyes droops like an icon in the middle - this "ideal/maternal" image forms a sharp contrast with the dark reality below.

Bartolomé uses realistic techniques to render human texture, combining the holy composition of religious paintings with modern ruins, making this work full of visual tension and metaphorical space. He places the collective body in the ruins of the building, forming a visual experience between the religious altar and the court, inspiring the viewer to reflect on power, order and the meaning of survival.

Closing Time is an important creation of the artist in the context of social criticism, with both visual shock and symbolic depth. It occupies an important position in the context of contemporary figurative art in Southeast Asia and is also highly concerned by collectors and curators.
