Notes:
Gregorius Sidharta Soegijo was a seminal Indonesian sculptor and educator whose innovative approaches significantly influenced modern sculpture in Indonesia. Born in Yogyakarta, he began his artistic journey at Sanggar Pelukis Rakyat in 1947 and was among the first graduates of the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI) in 1953. Further honing his craft, Sidharta studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in the Netherlands from 1957 to 1960. Upon returning to Indonesia, he dedicated himself to teaching, first at ASRI and later at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), where he co-founded the sculpture department in 1965. His pedagogical methods seamlessly integrated traditional and contemporary art forms, fostering a new generation of sculptors.
Sidharta’s sculptural practice is distinguished by its bold materiality and philosophical resonance. His use of bronze, wood, and found objects often interrogated the social and spiritual fabric of Indonesian life—ranging from intimate meditations on human dignity to public monuments of national identity, including the Garuda Pancasila at the Indonesian Parliament. Across his career, he consistently challenged the formal and thematic boundaries of sculpture, embedding within his works a quiet yet powerful call for introspection. His artistic legacy remains deeply embedded in Indonesia’s visual culture, celebrated for its clarity of form and conceptual depth.
- Condition: The sculpture is in good condition.
