Notes:
In this delightful painting, "Ducks", pioneering Singaporean modern artist Chen Wen Hsi revisited one of his most iconic subject matters - waterfowl with his distinctive ink language. In the painting, several wild ducks are swimming or resting, achieving a harmonious balance between movement and stillness through carefully orchestrated spatial arrangement. Rendered in subtle, elegant tones, the painting demonstrates the artist's fluid and expressive brushwork, embodying both the spirit of Chinese freehand and Western structural awareness - a testament to Chen's profound mastery of ink techniques and distinctive artistic cultivation.
Renowned for his depictions of egrets, gibbons, fish, and waterfowl, Chen particularly elevated the subject of duck into a classic leitmotif of his late career. A fellow alumnus of Xu Beihong from the Lingnan School, Chen became a pivotal figure in advancing modern art after settling in Singapore, establishing himself as a foundational force in the region's art education and practice. His duck flocks transcend mere naturalistic observation, imbuing a lyrical meditation on vitality and tranquil existence.
Ingenious in composition, this lot is filled with the color use of light and dark, wet and dry, blank spaces and dotted dyeing to weave a dynamic water scene. The ducks in the painting are depicted in various expressions through vivacious strokes, while the interplay between suggestive waterweed impressions and feather-textured ink dots creates remarkable means, revealing complexity through simplicity, and substance through void. Regarded as a paradigm of Chen Wen Hsi's highly refined artistic language in his later years, this painting retains clear inscriptions and seals with warm-toned paper preserved in excellent condition. It is a rare masterpiece from Chen Wen Hsii's Duck series, carrying great artistic and collection value.
- Condition: Please enquire via email to [email protected]
