Alit Sembodo’s (1973-2003) unique artistic style is recognisable by an eclectic mix of Chinese ink and acrylic. Despite the ink being a wet medium, he subverts its convention by using a dry technique to create the textural effects like pencil etching. In a sea of monochrome mythical characters and muscle-clad bodies grasping and jostling each other, Sembodo draws our attention to jerseys and vehicles rendered in bright colours. Modes of transport – boat, car, gerobak (cartwheel), truck and motorcycle – seemingly suggest mobility, yet the congestion and scrambling speak to struggles where freedom is constrained by chaos and social tension.
Alit Sembodo is an Indonesian painter acclaimed for his works that delve into dystopian imaginations, human conditions, and sociopolitical commentary. Born in Magelang, he pursued formal studies at the Indonesia Institute of Fine Art (ISI) Yogyakarta in 1995 and actively participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across major Indonesian cities.
Posthumously, Sembodo's works have continued to garner attention, with exhibitions such as "Political Circus: An Ancient World" at the National Gallery of Indonesia in 2011 showcasing his mixed media creations from 1999 to 2003. His art remains in high demand among collectors in Taiwan, Singapore, and various European countries, reflecting its enduring appeal and significance in contemporary art circles.
