Ahmad Sadali’s 1984 work in this lot evokes serenity with midnight blue, embellished with accents of gold impasto and foil, like windows that peer into the night sky. The subdued tone with light textural contrast echoes his other works from the same period, notably “Ayat di Kitari Bentuk - Bentuk Bersisa Emas” (1986) with golden Quran verses against a blue background. As a pious devotee and religious thinker, his works are embedded with profound spiritual connotations and philosophical musings, often manifesting in emotive gestures like force fields emanating energies.
Known for his modern abstraction through deep engagement with the Islamic faith, Ahmad Sadali’s art contributed significantly to the discourse on art and spirituality in Southeast Asia. He is further regarded as an academic and mentor. Originally from Bandung, he studied in Bandung Institute of Technology (Institut Teknologi Bandung) under the tutelage of Ries Mulder, a Dutch painter and lecturer who also helped establish the Department of Fine Arts there. This mentorship exposed him to Cubist styles and Western artistic principles, which he later harmoniously blended with Indonesian cultural and religious elements. In 1981, he was a guest judge for “Singapore Innovations in Art” competition alongside luminary ASEAN scholars such as Prof. Napoleon Abueva of University of the Philippines, Panom Suwannath, senior lecturer of Silpakorn University, and Singapore's Ng Eng Teng.
