In "Architecture on Watermelon", Indonesian sculptor Agapetoes Agus Kristiandana uses poetic and metaphorical sculptural language to depict a dreamscape frozen in the moment of bronze casting. The sculpture features a half-moon-shaped curved surface resembling a rounded, peeled watermelon rind, upon which stands a densely stacked and varied group of Gothic buildings. The structure evokes both the ruins of an ancient castle and a phantom city from a fairy tale.
The artist employs copper as the medium and incorporates the mottled texture of naturally oxidized bronze, giving the buildings a calm, weathered appearance—heavy and solemn after years of erosion. Its slightly tilted structure and the hemispherical fulcrum partially exposed beneath create a subtle swaying visual illusion, endowing the work with a unique dynamic quality, as if gently oscillating between reality and imagination, generating an almost surreal fairy-tale tension.
Kristiandana excels at transforming sculpture into a vessel for history, culture, and memory. "Architecture on Watermelon" is an allegorical visual metaphor—modern memories of home, ideals, and time quietly growing atop fruit-like, hill-like forms, like a dream that never fades.
