The Green Dog in easel paintings seemed to have given Zhou Chunya infinite creation fervor, which would inevitably develop into spatial work, the sculpture. What we saw here, the Three Dogs, is a cast copper sculpture worked by Zhou Chunya in 2006 taking the green dog of painting as model. The work’s subject appropriated a well-known story in Chinese classical text, the Romance of the Three Kingdom. The main body of the sculpture corresponded with the subject are three green dog with expressionism form, which seemed come to the ground from Zhou Chunya’s easel paintings with their invariable intrinsic expressionism; their opened mouths, the red tongues and the bizarre appearance, etc. The quiet green here might be the duplication of the counter-natural color in the easel paintings, and also the oxidized characteristic the sculpture material. Compared with the easel green dogs, the sculpture had been given more possibilities of explanation for its more space compatibilities. |
