Paintings that speak of history and personal experience often produce strong resonance and compelling visualization. In his recent body of work, Harsono had begun to explore issues of his Chinese identity. On this painting, FX Harsono depicts a lady donning an embroidered kebaya seated on an wooden chair. Her expression is clearly that of anguish and apprehension. This mood is further echoed in the setting of the room she is in: an empty room filled with butterflies. Harsono often uses the imagery of the butterfly as a representation of victimisation – and in this case Harsono adds another layer to this representation by drawing on the parallel with the subject of the painting. |
