Adi Kaniko (b. 1964)
Adi Kaniko was born 1964 in Surabaya, Indonesia. The artist studied at the School of Art, IKIP in Surabaya, Indonesia. He was a finalist at the 6th Philip Morris Competition Art Awards held in Jakarta. Adi's work that often reflects on the ills of hypocritical regimes, signifies how art has a special, truthful task to carry out, and must read and understand the people's inner voices. He has participated in numerous group shows including; "Pameran Greget Paradigma" in Jakarta; "Gak Kakehan Omong" in Surabaya; The 7th Philip Morris Competition Art Awards in Jakarta; "100th days of the Painter Amang Rahman Death" in Surabaya; "Experimental Art", Surabaya and "Democracy" held in Solo, Indonesia.
Affandi (b. 1907 – 1990)
Affandi was born 1907 in Cirebon, West Java, in 1907. Affandi taught himself how to paint since 1934 and in the mid 50’s began to create expressionistic paintings. He is considered as one of the founding fathers of Indonesian Modern Art. He founded the “Community Artist” and the “People’s Artist” organizations in 1946 and 1947 respectively. He also taught painting and sculpture at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta. In his lifetime, Affandi received numerous awards and accolades in Indonesia as well as abroad, with the crowning glory being the Grand Maestro title in Florence, Italy. He had held numerous solo and group exhibitions in several countries including Indonesia, France, Belgium, Brazil, USA, Italy, India and Singapore.
Agapetus A Kristiandana (b. 1968)
Agapetus was born in 1968 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The artist graduated from the Indonesia Institute of Arts Yogyakarta in 1994. Agapetus was awarded the prestigious Indonesia Art Award in 2000. Two years later, he held his first solo exhibition in Jakarta and took part in “Four Cities Exhibition” held in Canada, New Jersey, Virginia and New York. Agapetus likes to portray animals in fantastical forms, especially cows both in paintings and sculptures. Though his works may seem whimsical, they are often linked to the human conditions such as alienation, internal and external conflicts.
Agung Mangu Putra (b. 1963)
Agung Mangu Putra was born 1963 in Bali, Indonesia. He studied at the faculty of Art and Design at ISI (Indonesia Arts Institute) and graduated in 1990. His first group exhibition was held in Denpasar, bali in 1987, and his first solo exhibition was held 3 years later in Ubud. He received the Best in Design Arts award at the 4th and 5th Anniversary of ISI, and was one of 10 finalist at the 1994 Philiip Morris Award. Mangu Putra's presents dreamlike landscapes rendered on canvas using unusual texturing materials which can include such materials as pasta and glue. This exciting and very talented artist has participated in a number of group and solo exhibitions throughout Indonesia and abroad.
Agung Yuwono (b.1977)
R.A. Hartanto Agung Yuwono born 1977 in Central Java, Indonesia. He studied Graphic Design at the Modern School of Designs in Jogjakarta, Indonesia. After working for a period as a graphic designer, he became a full time artist in 2000. He has held several exhibitions and partook in several art events in Indonesia and Singapore.
Agus Suwage (b. 1959)
Born in 1959, in Purworejo, Central Java, Agus Suwage was initially trained as a graphic designer at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). His works is about the ironies of the human condition – how violence and pain are irrevocably connected to happiness and pleasure. Married with 2 children, Agus Suwage currently lives and works in Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. He held his recent solo exhibition entitled Ough… Nguik!, at the National Gallery of Indonesia and Countrybution, the 7th Yogyakarta Biennial in 2003. He also exhibited at the 2nd AsiaPacific Triennial (1996), Awas! Recent Art from Indonesia (a touring exhibition to Australia, Japan, Germany and the Netherlands, 1999-2000) and Man + Space at Gwangju Biennale (2000).
Alit Sembodo (b. 1973 – 2003)
Born in 1973 in Magelang, Central Java. Alit Sembodo’s work is characterized by dramatic throngs of diminutive human figures in intense activity dominating his canvases. Despite a short-lived artistic career, dying at the age of 30, he created a number of significant and noteworthy works. He often exhibited his artworks. He won the Pratisara Affandi Adi Karya Prize in 1999 when he was still attending at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta. He combines a powerful narrative talent through his illustration to comment on society. Thus Alit's paintings have shown the tendency to become a media for social commentary.
Amrus Natalsya (b. 1933)
Amrus Natalsya was born 1933 in Indonesia. A sculptor and painter, Amrus Natalsya graduated from ASRI / Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts, Yogyakarta in 1962. In 1961 together with Sutopo, Isa Hasanda, Misbach, Djokopekik, Gumelar and others, he founded the Sanggar Bumi Tarung in Yogyakarta. In June 2008, Amrus participated in a landmark group exhibition entitled “Sanggar Bambu 2” held at National Gallery with remaining artists of Sanggar Bumi Tarung.
Ariadhitya Pramuhendra (b. 1984)
Ariadhitya Pramuhendra was born 1984 in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. He graduated from Bandung Institute of Technology in 2007. Aridhitya Pramuhendra is quickly making a name for himself as a hot young star in Indonesia. He graduated from Bandung Institute of Technology, majoring in Printmaking in 2007. He has participated in a number of group exhibitions presenting emerging Indonesian artists over the past couple of years and has caught audience attention with his dramatic self-portraits in charcoal on canvas.
Astari Rasjid (b. 1953)
Astari was born 1953 in Indonesia. She travelled to London, UK to study fashion design before switching to pursue painting in Minnesota, USA and later enrolled at the Royal College of Art in London. She has been a member of the Jakarta Art Foundation and alecturer at the Jakarta Art Institute, Faculty of Fine Art. She has participated in various exhibitions both in Indonesia and internationally.
Aung Kyaw Htet (b. 1965)
Aung Kyaw Htet was born in 1965 in Myaungmya and is a graduate from the State School of Fine Arts in Rangoon. He is a devout Buddhist and grew up in a small village, and these two factors which have a strong influence on his art. Aung Kyaw Htet is famous for painting the religious life in Burma. He has participated in several exhibitions in Burma, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and his works are in the permanent collections of the National Art Gallery of Malaysia and the National Museum of Myanmar in Burma.
Awiki (b. 1961)
Awiki was born 1961 in Surabaya (East Java), Indonesia studied painting from Bani Amora in Genteng, Banyuwangi at age of twelve at the Intermediate School of Art (SMSR) Yogyakarta. He also studied Art at Sanggar Pajeng Art Studio known for its strict adherence to realism. He has held solo and group exhibitions in Indonesia, Singapore and China. Awiki works fast and furious with a thick impasto style and uses an intense palette on subjects drawn from everyday encounters and impressions. Awiki, who is esteemed among his peers for his modesty as well as his talent presently resides in Bali.
Bahk Seon-ghi (b. 1966)
Bahk Seon-ghi was born 1966 in SunSan, South Korea. He majored in Sculpture at the Arts department of the Chung-Ang University, Seoul and graduated in 1994. In 1995, he enrolled at the Academie Di Belle Arti Di Brera in Milan, Italy to further pursue sculpture studies. The artist is presently based in Milan, and has been involved in several exhibitions in Italy. He has held solo shows in Italy, Germany and Korea as well as international group shows in Spain, USA and Israel.
Bambang Pramudiyanto (b. 1965)
Bambang was born 1965 in Klaten, Central Java. He studied art at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia/ASRI), Yogyakarta from 1984 to 1989. Bambang began his career by painting all kinds of motorized vehicles in different contexts and conditions, from rusty old cars to shiny new motor vehicles. He took part in his first group exhibition in Jakarta in 1990, and in 2001 he held his first solo exhibition. His works have been shown in a number of Biennales including Biennale X at Taman Ismail Marzuki Jakarta, Biennale Yogyakarta VI and 2003 CP Open Biennale at Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Jakarta.
Basoeki Abdullah (b. 1915 - 1993)
Basoeki Abdullah was born 1915 in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. The love for Art runs thick in his blood, his father was the artist Abdullah Soerjo Soebroto (1878 – 1942) who was also a dancer. In 1935, Basoeki Abdullah was awarded a prestigious Art scholarship to study for 2 years at the Academie Voor Beeldende Kunsten (Royal Academy of Visual Arts) in the Netherlands. After graduation, he travelled around Europe to cities in Italy and France in order to further his knowledge of the arts. Between 1962 to 1976, he lived in Thailand and served as a painter for the royal family. Later, back in Indonesia he joined the Poetera, People’s Activity Centre in Batavia, Jakarta. In his lifetime, Basoeki was awarded many times, and had participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad, and is considered one of Indonesia’s finest masters.
Bencharong Kowapitaktat (b. 1973)
Bencharong Kowapitaktat was born 1973 in Thailand. He graduated from the prestigious Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok from the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts. Later He studied at the Faculty of Painting, sculpture and graphic arts at Silpakorn University. He won several awards at Art contests by prominent banks and corporations. In 1997, Bencharong was the Top Winner for the Thailand Art Award 1997 organized by the Philip Morris Group. Bencharong has a fine eye for rendering farmyard scenes of chickens with life-like detailing. His works has a rustic charming appeal as well as beauty in composition.
Catur Binaprasetyo (b. 1973)
Catur Binaprasetyo was born 1973 in Wonogiri, Indonesia. He graduated from the Institut Seni Indonesia at Yogyakarta. His first solo exhibition was held in 2006 entitled “Kota Fantasia”. He has participated in several grop exhibitions held in Singapore, Japan, Thailand and Sweden. Catur has won several awards including two in 1995; first Prize at the Australian-Indonesia Golden Friendship Art Competition and the “Warior Of Sipan Golden Medal” in Peru. Award In 2000, he received the Asean Art Award in Singapore and in 2003, he was the winner of the Indofood Art Award.
Chen Feng 陈峰 (b. 1874)
Chen Feng was born in 1874, in Ningbo, in the Zhejiang province of China. He participated in more than 20 solo and group exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Ningbo between 1984 and 2002. Chen Feng also published widely on art theories, art history, poetry and philosophy. His works are are collected by individuals and institutions alike in China, Japan, France, Britain, Singapore, Taiwan, United States and Australia.
Chen Hongzhu 陈虹竹 (b. 1982)
Chen Hongzhu was born 1982 in Chongqing, Sichuan province, China. She graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts (Oil painting Department) in 2006. She held both solo and group exhibitions in Singapore, China and Korea. In 2006, she participated in "Man and Great Ideals", an exhibition held in Seoul, South Korea, and the following year, a group exhibition entitled “Pure Expectation” Youth Art Exhibition held in Beijing, China. In Dec 2008, she participated in “Surfing Animamax” which featured young contemporary Chinese artists.
Chen Junde 陈钧德 (b. 1937)
Chen Junde was born in 1937, in Zhenhai, in the Zhe Jiang province in China. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department in Shanghai Theatre Academy in 1960, and is a member of the Chinese Oils Art Committee, professor of Shanghai Theatre Academy, and chairs the Shanghai Oils Association. His Impressionistic style is influenced by Van Gogh and Cezanne. He has held exhibitions in countries including China, United States, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and France.
Chen Ke 陈可(b. 1978)
Chen Ke was born 1978 in Tonjiang, Sichuan province in China. She graduated with a masters degree from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 2005. Upon graduation, she moved to Beijing where her works did very well in the art market. Money generated from her paintings enabled her to buy a house, a car and even set up a studio. In 2006, her work "The Little F" was sold at the record price of HKD 370,000. Chen Ke is also an avid photographer, and also experimented with mixed media, sculpture as well as other art forms. Since 2001, Chen Ke has participated n more than 20 group exhibitions in Hong Kong, China, Italy and Germany.
Chen Laixing 陳來興 (b. 1949)
Chen Lai-Xing was born 1949 in Zhanghua, Taiwan. He graduated from the Taiwan Academy of Art in 1972. During the 1980s, he developed his art into an expressionist and satirical commentary on the politics and society of Taiwan. Chen uses a realistic style to paint the lives of ordinary people at times using overlapping images express the pressure on people in a modern society. He has participated in major group art events in Taiwan and abroad.
Chiu Ya-tsai 邱亞才 (b. 1949)
Chiu Ya-tsai was born in 1949, Yilan on the east coast of Taiwan. He is a self taught artist who specializes in painting Taiwan’s modern-day literati luminaries such as poets, artists and professors. Influenced by European expressionism, his subjects often appeared elongated with an air of subdued melancholy which is accentuated by his use of somber moody shades of colors. Besides painting, Chiu Ya-tsai is also a poet as well as a published writer of numerous novels. The artist presently lives and works in Taipei. His paintings have been widely exhibited in Spring Gallery (Taipei), National Museum of History and Taiwan Museum of Art as well as overseas in Hongkong, Australia and USA.
Chun Kwang-Young (b. 1944)
Chun Kwang-Young was born 1944 in Hong Chon, Kwang-do, Korea. He attained his BFA in 1968 from Hong-Ik University in Korean, and his MFA in 1971 from the Philadelphia College of Art. He currently lives and works in Seoul. Chun received several awards including the Silver Prize in the 27th Cheltenham Art Center Exhibition in 1974, and in 1973 the Special Prize in the Earth Art II sponsored by the Civic Center Museum in Philadelphia. Chun participated in an extensive number of group exhibitions throughout Korea and the United States. In 1968, he held his first solo exhibition in the Seoul Cultural Center Gallery, and his latest one is in the planning, to be held in 2010 in Beijing, China.
Dao Quoc Huy (b. 1971)
Dao Quoc Huy was born 1971 in Vietnam. He graduated from the University of Fine Arts located in Hanoi, Vietnam. Later he taught at the university and became a member of the distinguished Vietnam Fine Art Association. Since 1996, he has been honored with awards from the Vietnam Fine Art Association. In 2000, he was awarded the silver medal at the National Exhibition held in Vietnam. Dac Quoc Huy has exhibited extensively in Vietnam and abroad in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, China and Switzerland.
Dede Eri Supria (b. 1956)
Dede Eri Supria was born 1956 in Jakarta, Indonesia. From 1972 to 1973, he studied under the artist, Dukut Hendronoto. He was encouraged to pursue a formal art education at the Indonesia School of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta and graduated in 1977. He held his first solo show in 1979 which received critical success, and since then has been involved in more than 70 group shows in Indonesia as well as abroad. He received the Adam Malik (3rd Indonesian Vice President) award in 1986, and in 1997, he was a finalist at the Philip Morris Indonesia Art Awards.
Deng Xinli 邓新黎 (b. 1974)
Deng Xinli was born 1974 in Henan province, China. He graduated from the Chinese Central Institution of Fine Arts in 1997. He went to New Zealand to pursue a degree at the Whitecliffe College of Art and Design. Later he became a member of Auckland Artist Association of New Zealand and member of Chinese Artist Association of New Zealand. From 2004 to 2007, he was invited to teach ‘Surrealist Art and Traditional Painting Techniques’ at the Uxbridge Art Centre of New Zealand. Deng Xinli's paintings have always been surrealistic in nature. In his paintings, he tries to express the current state of political and social undercurrent and does it with surrealist humour with historical and cultural undertones. He has participated in many group exhibitions held in New Zealand and China.
Ding Shaoguang 丁绍光 (b. 1939)
Ding Shaoguang was born 1939 in Shanxi Province, China. He graduated in 1962 from the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts. For the next 18 years, he lectured at the Yunnan Arts Academy. He achieved fame with the creation of a large mural in 1979 entitled "Xishuangbanna, a Place of Beauty and Wonder", for the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. He has held solo shows were held over 400 times in various countries from 1986 to 1996, and his paintings are collected in 50 countries and regions. In the World Art Expo in Japan in 1990, he was ranked 29th in the top 100 art masters since the 14th century, the only Chinese artist on the list.
Dipo Andy (b. 1975)
Dipo Andy was born in 1975 in Sumbawa, Indonesia. He graduated from the Indonesia Institute of Art in 1999. Dipo Andy participated in more than 30 group exhibition and had his first solo exhibition in 1999 titled “Voice of Nation”. His most recent exhibition was “Mirror: Masters Revisited” in 2006. Dipo Andy won several awards, including the “Top 5 Winner of Indonesia Art Award“ in 1999.
Djoko Pekik (b. 1938)
Djoko Pekik was born 1938 in Grobogan, Purwodadi in Central Java. In 1958, he enrolled at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI) where one of his lecturers was Widayat, an accomplished artist. Joko Pekik's art is typically Javanese in style and he has become one of the country's foremost greatest artists in satirizing the society he lives in. From 1990 to 1991, his works were part of a travelling exhibition of contemporary works for the Festival of Indonesia in USA. Since then, he had held numerous solo and group exhibitions in various parts of Indonesia and overseas. “The Art Gallery of Djoko Pekik” is owned by the artist and showcases many of his own collection.
Donovan Phity (b. 1968)
Donovan Phity was born 1968 in Pontianak, Indonesia. He pursued Fine Arts at the ISI (Indonesian Art Institute), Yogyakarta in 1988. He then worked in advertising agencies and publishing firms from 2001 till 2005. In 2007, Donovan Phity achieved recognition for his work when he received an award for the Best Painting Arts in Batam, Indonesia. He has actively participated in various exhibitions in Indonesia from 2003 till 2007. His most recent exhibitions include a solo show titled" Empathy in Art" in Jakarta 2008 and a group exhibition at the Art Singapore in October 2008.
Dullah (b. 1919 - 1996)
Dullah was born 1919 in Solo, Indonesia. This self-taught artist has once admitted that Affandi and S.Soedjojono were his teachers, but his creations followed the school of realism. Since the early days of the independence, Dullah was very close to Soekarno, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia and was appointed by Soekarno to care for the President’s private art collection and as curator of the state painting collections. At age 70, Dullah built his museum, now a cultural landmark, as his dedication to a love of the arts over a creative lifetime.
Eko Nugroho (b. 1977)
Eko Nugroho was born 1977 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He pursued art at the High School for Fine Arts in Yogyakarta and graduated in 1997. Following that, he enrolled in the Indonesian Art Institute graduating in 2006. A very accomplished and well received Indonesian artist, he has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in many group shows since 1999. Countries where his paintings have been exhibited include Malaysia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Japan, Spain, The Netherlands, Germany, Finland and USA. He was also awarded art residencies in many host countries such as USA, Australia and Singapore among others. His works are presently held at permanent collections in many galleries and art museums around the world.
Erica Hestu Wahyuni (b. 1971)
Erica was born 1971 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She is hailed as one of the finest artist in Naïve Art (Fresh, childlike style of painting, employing bright colours and strong, rhythmic designs) from Indonesia. She studied painting at the prestigious Indonesian Fine Art Institute in Yogyakarta, Indonesia and Surikov Institute of Art, Russia. Her paintings are usually unpretentious expressions of herself and they reflect her experiences and interests. Erica’s art may be childlike, but they are certainly not simplistic. Each work contains interesting narrative qualities, which reveal the worldview of the artist. She has held solo and group exhibitions in Singapore, Indonesia, Japan and Philippines.
Fu Kai lai 傅开来 (b. 1980)
Fu Kai Lai was born 1980 in Chongqing, China. In 2000, he entered the Chengdu Fine Arts Academy, Szechuan Conservatory of Music and studied oil painting, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 2004. He continued his Masters degree at the academy and graduated in 2007. In 2002, he took part in his first group exhibition entitled “Outburst” held in Chengdu, following that, he was involved in several others held in Szechuan province. In 2007, his works were showcased at “Animamix Biennale” held at MOCA Art Museum in Shanghai.
Galam Zulkifli (b. 1971)
Galam Zulkifli was born 1971 in Sumbawa, Indonesia. The artist studied and graduated from the Fine Arts Department, IKIP, Yogyakarta. He has held 5 solo shows to date; the first entitled “9 Taman Seni” was held in 200o, Yogyakarta. He has also participated in many group exhibitions since 2000, many of which are held in major cities in Indonesia and abroad in China, Thiland and Malaysia. Galam Zulkifli was awarded the Top Five Philip Morris Indonesia Art Award in 1999, 2003 and was an Asean Arts Award Finalist in 2004.
Gao XiaoWu 高孝午 (b. 1976)
Gao XiaoWu was born 1976 in Fujian province, China. He graduated from the department of sculpture in Xiamen Art Academy in 1999, afterwhich he enrolled at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. It has been said that although Gao’s whimsical sculptures can be interpreted in various ways, they never fail to bring a smile to all their viewers. Gao Xiaowu’s pieces are a reflection of contemporary Chinese society, and portray a collective Asian identity with its unique mannerism. Since his first exhibition in 1999 at the 9th National Art Exhibition held in Beijing, he has participated in numerous group shows across China and overseas in Singapore, Korea and France.
Gao Zengli 高增礼 (b. 1964)
Born 1964 in Gansu Province, China. The artist emigrated to France in 1998. An alumni of the National Academy of Fine Arts in Shandong, China as well as the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, France, he retains a deep interest in Chinese history. The subject matter of Gao Zengli’s artworks is historical - be it image/portrait or the element of expression, they are all closely related to history. His oil paintings often times used impasto style to bring out the tactile quality of his historical subject matters such as the last Emperor of China, Puyi. Gao also uses different materials for sensorial appreciation in his works. The artist has participated in countless exhibitions as well as art fairs in Asia, Europe and USA.
Gerard Pieter Adolfs (b. 1898 - 1968)
Gerard Adolfs was born 1898 in Semarang, Indonesia. Adolfs studied architecture in Holland and designed several houses before returning to Indonesia in 1922. Adolfs specialized in painting and drawing scenes of life such as market place etc, based on his travels in Java, Bali and Japan. In 1924 he held his solo exhibition, which included drawings of Javanese scenes. He continued to exhibit in Indonesia, Java, Japan, Singapore and even USA. Adolfs returned to Holland in 1940, just before the occupation of the Netherlands by Germany.
Gong Lilong 宫立龙 (b. 1953)
Gong Lilong was born 1953 in the city of Dalian in China. He graduated from the department of Oil painting at Luxun Fine Art Academy in 1982. His works tend to feature charming and handsome-featured as well as full-figured Chinese folks or couples engaged in dance, play or displays of affection. Currently, he is the Vice-president at the Fine Artist Institute of Shenyang province, and a member of the Fine Art Institute of China. The artist has taken part in numerous exhibitions in China and abroad.
Gong Ming 宫铭 (b. 1972)
Gong Ming was born 1972 in Inner Mongolia, China. He pursued his art education at the Release Armed Forces Art Academy in 1993, and graduated in 1995. He participated in the prestigious 2001, 2004 and 2005 Chinese Art Expo held in Beijing, China. He has also been involved in numerous shows held in Beijing, and in 2008, he was in the “Michael Shultz Comtemporary Art Exhibition” that was held in Beijing as well as abroad in London, UK.
Guan Jian 关健 (b. 1957)
Born 1957 in Liaoning, China. The artist graduated from Liaoning Normal Arts School and is a member of the Chinese Artists Association. He is famous for painting bronzed Botero-esque Chinese peasants who lacks facial features. Their oversized hands and feet reflects the manual nature of their livelihood in working with heavy farm machinery and the land. These earthy giants symbolizes how intrinsically we are tied to the land, and that we should not take it for granted. In 2004 at the “Central Academy of Fine Arts Exhibition of Outstanding Graduates”held in Beijing, China, Guan Jian’s work received the Excellence Award. Guan Jian is a full time artist and has held and participated in many exhibitions at the Liaoning Art Museum.
Guo Jin 郭晉 (b. 1964)
Guo Jin was born in 1964, in Chengdu, China. A graduate of Szechuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1990, he has participated in countless successful solo and group exhibitions in China, South East Asia, USA and Europe. His paintings of cherubic children in costume and play are easily recognizable and have become a signature for his work. A prevalent theme for Guo Jin’s paintings is the “ reflection and contemplation of man’s naiveté” while the children “ represent the essence of idealism that we possessed but were probably lost after”. His most recent solo exhibition entitled “Guo Jin’s Return”, was held in 2008 at the Indonesia National Museum in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Hamdan Omar (b. in Malaysia)
Hamdan Omar was born in Malaysia. He attended the School of Art and Design at MARA Institute of Technology currently called UITM, Malaysia. In 1977, he graduated as a Graphic Designer and joined the Malaysian advertising industry. He was very successful and won the prestigious Best of the Best of Indonesian Advertising Award in 1995. He retired from the ad industry in 2005 to become a full time painter. He started exhibiting his works since 2007 in group shows and in 2008 staged his first solo exhibition in Jakarta.
Han Qing 韓情 (b. 1965)
Born 1965 in Sichuan Province, China. He is a graduate from the Sichuan Institute of Fine Arts. Han qing specializes in depicting scenes of the street at night particularly the lights. It has been said that Han qing’s softly pink and grey hued paintings of blurry street scenes and lights in his “Street Light” series, can be appreciated like a piece of jazz music. His works render the viewer with a sensation of sweet comfort and a sense of nostalgia with their muted almost dreamlike quality. The artist has exhibited extensively in solo as well as group exhibitions in China, Macau, The Netherlands, Mexico, Portugal and Brazil. The artist now resides and works in Beijing.
Hendra Gunawan (b. 1918 to 1983)
Hendra Gunawan was born in 1918, in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. A remarkable man, he was not only a gifted artist, but a poet, sculptor and a political activist. In his youth, he was a student of artists Wahdi Sumanta and Affandi. Later In 1935, together with 2 other artists, they formed the Kelombok Lima (Group of Five) in Bandung. He also helped to establish Sundanese Heritage (Bandung) and People’s Artist Studio (Yogyakarta) in 1940 and 1947 respectively. In 1978, he moved to Bali and 3 years later, held a solo exhibition in Denpasar. His works are vigorous portrayals of the lives of villagers and common people in bright colors. Many of Gunawan's works have been lost, fortunately museums and private collectors have located and catalogued over 120 of his paintings and sketches, along with eleven sculptures.
Heri Kris (b. 1967)
Heri Kris was born 1967 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He pursued art studies at the Indonesia Institute of Arts - ISI, Yogyakarta. Heri held his inaugural solo exhibition in Jerman in 1994. He has since participated in several group exhibitions in Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Bali, Semarang, Denmark and Amsterdam, among which are 'Not Just The Political' and '83 Widayat' at Museum H. Widayat Magelang in 2002.
Hu Xiangdong 胡向东 (b. 1961)
Hu Xiangdong was born 1961 in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China. He graduated from the prestigious Nanjing Academy of Fine Arts, Nanjing, China in 1988 after a rigorous course of study in painting. Hu worked many different art-related jobs after graduation, from interior design to wedding photography. In the late 1990’s, Hu became well known for his controversial installations that mocks China’s nouveau riche. Recently, Hu has painted canvases depicting transparent plastic draped over figures and postcard images. Since 1985, Hu has exhibited in Singapore, China, The Netherlands, United States, Switzerland and Germany.
Hua Jiming 华继明 (b. 1964)
Hua Jiming was born in 1964 in Huangshi, Hubei province in China. He started to learn painting at a young age of 13, and graduated from Hubei Arts Institute in 1992. His first group exhibition was the “Nothing & Something Painting Group” exhibition in 1986. He participated in many exhibitions, the most recent one was held in Beijing.
Huang Fong (b. 1936)
Huang Fong was born 1936 at east Java, Indonesia. He graduated from IKIP Seni Rupa, Surabaya, Indonesia. Huang Fong made friends with many senior painters and learnt a lot from them. One of them would be the famous Indonesia’s artist Affandi, whom he befriended in Bali in 1968. Since 1963, he was a professional Indonesian artist. At first, he painted oil on canvas, eventually, during 1974; he began to exploring his arts by mixed the East and West techniques. Huang Fong has already held solo exhibitions since 1961 and his art pieces were exhibited in Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea and Australia.
Huang Gang 黄钢 (b. 1961)
Huang Gang was born 1961 in Beijing, China. A Master Degree graduate of the China Central Academy of Art & Design, he lived through the violent and turbulent Cultural Revolution. That experience left an indelible mark in his psyche that has influenced his mixed media works. Incorporating both western and eastern elements, Gang’s creations have been exhibited and well received in Singapore, China, Korea, Germany, France, Switzerland and exclusively in the United States at Galerie Zuger in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His fascination with Tibetan culture is evident in a majority if his works, whereby he incorporates indigenous Tibetan timber and hand written buddhist scriptures as well as religious motifs such as the Mandala.
I Made Djirna (b. 1957)
I Made Djirna was born 1957 in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakartain 1985. A active artist who enjoys multi-faceted and experimental works of different mediums, he has held numerous solo shows as well as participated in group shows in Indonesia as well as internationally. He currently lives and works in Ubud, Bali.
I Made Wianta (b. 1949)
I Made Wianta was born 1949 in the village of Apuan, Bali, Indonesia. He graduated from the prestigious ASTI art academy in Yogyakarta. Wianta thrived in ASTI during the heady years of the early 70s. Along with his experiences, Wianta had grown into a vigorous multidimensional artist from a versatile painter. He is regarded as one of the most influential living Indonesian artists today. Wianta has frequently travelled and exhibited in Indonesia as well as abroad.
I Nyoman Masriadi (b. 1973)
Masriadi was born 1973 in Gianyar, Bali. He received his training in art at the Institute Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta. Presently, Nyoman Masriadi is one of the most well received contemporary Indonesian artist in the Art world. He has received various awards for his work, including the Best Painting Award at the Des Natalis Awards in 1997, held by the Yogyakarta Art Institute (ISI). Since 1993, he has participated in group exhibitions in Australia and the Netherlands, and in Indonesia: In Bali, Jakarta, Mungkid (Mageland), Solo, Surabaya and Yogyakarta. In 2008, he held his first solo exhibition “Black is my weapon” at the Singapore Art Museum.
I Wayan Suja (b. 1975)
Wayan Suja was born 1975 in Batubulan, Bali, Indonesia. He graduated from the Indonesian Art Institute in Denpasar, Bali in 2001. In 2000, he was top ten finalists at the 7th Phillip Morris Art Award held in Indoensia, and he was awarded Best Sketch and Best Work in previous years. He was one of the top finalist for the 2005 Sovereign Art Awards held in Hongkong. Wayan Suja held his first solo exhibition in Komaneka on December 2007.
Inge Rijanto (b. 1949)
Inge Rijanto (Ms) was born 1949 in Semarang, Central Java. She went abroad for studies and graduated as a fashion designer from Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste, Berlin, Germany. She later returned to Indonesia and attended Art lessons conducted by artists Teguh Ostenrik and Karman. She went on to pursue sculpture studies under veteran sculptor, Dolorosa Sinaga. She has been involved in several group exhibitions held in Indonesia, Singapore and France. In 2008, she exhibited her sculptures at the “Salon D’ Automne de International Luneville” at Central Culturel Erkman, Luneville, France.
Irman Rachman (b. 1970)
Irman Rachman was born 1970 in Bandung, Indonesia. He is a recipient of awards during the 5th and 8th Philio Morris Asean Art Awards as well as the 1999 Windsor and Newton Indonesian Art Competition. As a painter, Irman questions and examines the role of signs, dimensions, space, typography, textures and meanings in his abstract works. His first exhibition was in 1994 with the ‘depu’ group in STSI, Bandung entitled “Art and Photografi Plus”. Since then, he has exhibited in countries such as Korea, Vietnam, Bangladesh, UK and USA.
Jeff Shi Dah-Yue 石大宇 (b. 1964)
Jeff Shi was born 1980 in Taipei, Taiwan. He graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, USA in 1989. From 1993 to 1995, he worked as an in-house jewelry designer for the world famous renowned jewelry house, Harry Winston. He was deeply inspired by his 2 years experience at Harry Winston, and in 1996 set up the Dragonfly gallery in Taiwan. His paintings and sculptures borrow inspiration from fine jewelry design as well as mythology. He has participated in numerous exhibitions and art events held in France, Italy, China, Taiwan and USA.
Jeihan Sukmantara (b. 1938)
Jeihan Sukmantara was born 1938 in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia. The artist studied painting from 1953 to 1955 at HBS / Himpunan Budaya Surakarta under the guidance of Sumitro Hendronoto. From 1960 to 1966, he studied painting at ITB / Bandung Institute of Technology. Jeihan has held solo shows in Indonesia, Italy and France. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Indonesia, USA, Algeria, The Netherlands and Switzerland.
Ji Xiaofeng 纪晓峰
Ji Xiaofeng studied at the Central Acedemy of Arts and Design at the Decorating and Painting Department in 1977. She later enrolled at the Qingdao University and graduated in 1996. The main subjects in Ji’s paintings and sculptures are appealing rosy-cheeked women depicted in refined, smooth lines. In 2002, she participated in the Beijing International Art Exposition, and in 2005, the China Beijing International Art Biennale. She held a solo exhibition in Beijing in 2005 and has participated in numerous important art events held in China.
Jia Ming 贾明 (b. 1970)
Jia Ming was born 1970 in the city of Xi’an, China. He graduated from the Print Making Department of the Xian Academy of Fine Arts in 1995. In his works, the artist explores the importance of television in society especially a child’s world, and is inspired by TV pixels, developing the idea in his works. He has been involved in various exhibitions held in China as well as abroad in “Picking Morning Flowers in the West”, a group exhibition held in Singapore and “Contemporary Chinese Art Exhibition” held in Israel.
Jiang Shuo 蒋朔 (b. 1958)
Jiang Shuo was born in 1958 in Beijing, she studied sculpture at the Central Academy of Arts and Design, which is now under Tsinghua University. One of China’s most eminent female sculptors Jiang Shuo completed her master degree in 1985 and started her career in teaching sculpture at the Central Academy until 1989. With her husband Wu Shaoxiang, they migrated to Austria and worked at their joint studio there. Jiang Shuo’s signature works are her “red guards” series. These eye-catching bronzes adorn many institutions, private museums, public areas as well as private collections. Her distinctive sculptures have been well received round the world in both solo and group exhibitions in Asia, USA and Europe.
Ju Ming 朱銘 (b. 1938)
Ju Ming was born 1938 in Miaoli, Taiwan. At 71, Ju Ming has earned the right to be considered Taiwan's most pre-eminent sculptor and one of the finest sculptors in Asia. His inimitable style is recognized internationally especially his powerful elemental “Tai Chi” series. Ju Ming has taken part in numerous exhibitions held in many countries, venues include the South Bank Centre in London; the Musée d'Art contemporain de Dunkerque in France; Hakone Open-Air Museum in Tokyo; and La Place Vendome in Paris. His monumental works can also be admired in the Ju Ming Museum in Chinshan, Taiwan.
Kim Dong-Yoo (b. 1965)
Kim Dong-Yoo was born 1965 in Kongju, Korea. He was educated in the Mokwon University of Fine Art, and graduated with a BFA and a MFA. Kim held several solo exhibitions, with his first one in Daejeon Hyundai Gallery. Since then Kim held his exhibitions in Sabina Museum, Leehwaik Gallery, Art Park, Seoul National Museum, Chungju Space Mom, and Gumbo Museum.
Kim Tschang-Yeul (b. 1929)
Kim Tschang-Yeul was born 1929 in Mangsan, Pyeongahnamdo, Korea. He graduated from the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University in 1950. From 1966 to 1968, he was a member of The Art Students League of New York. He has held several solo and group exhibitions in many countries including China, Japan, USA, United Kingdom, France and Taiwan. He was honored with a solo exhibition at the National Museum of China in 2005, and that same year, he also exhibited at the world famous Guimet Museum of Asian Art in Paris, France. His works are collected by art institutions and museums around the world.
Krijono (b. 1951)
Krijono was born 1951 into an artist family in 1951 in Jakarta. His mother is a Batik Factory owner and his father is a painting collector who owns Harris Art Gallery. He developed a deep love for the arts through his early exposure. In 1970, Krijono studied at the Indonesia Academy of Art (ASRI), Yogyakarta. The artist uses bright colors, spontaneous brush strokes and bold lines in his striking expressionistic paintings. Regarding the use of colors, Krijono feels he can choose any color and use it to satisfy the needs of his creation, and refusing to mix colors to create new colors. “I am a painter, not a paint mixer” He once said. Krijono has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan.
Kwon Ki-Soo (b. 1972)
Kwon Ki-Soo was born 1972 in Young-Ju, Korea. He graduated from Hong-ik University in Seoul with a M.F.A in 1996 and B.F.A in 1998. Kwon participated in numerous group exhibitions, including ‘Pleasure Factory’ at the Seoul Museum of Art in 2003, ‘The Elegance of Silence: Contemporary Art from East Asia’ at Mori Art Museum, Japan, in 2004 as well as ‘Listening 2004 N.Y.’ at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, New York, in 2004. Kwon’s solo exhibitions includes ‘The Show 1998’ at Kwanghoon Gallery and “A Red Fountain” at Gallery Fish in 2004 in Seoul.
Lee Jung-Woong (b. 1963)
Lee Jung-woong was born 1963 in Woolegung-gun, Korea. He graduated from the Department of Western painting at Keimyun University in Daegu, Korea. He is renowned for his hyper-realist works of traditional brushes which look like they are stuck on canvases. He has held solo and participated in group art shows across Korea and internationally at the Arco Art Fair, Madrid; Zurich Art Fair, Switzerland and Europ Art Fair in Geneva. In 2009, he was involved in a Korean Contemporary Art Show at the Singapore Art Museum.
Lee Man Fong (b. 1913 - 1988)
Lee Man Fong was born in Canton, China. At three years old, his family emigrated to Singapore. In 1932, he uprooted once again, this time to Indonesia, to become a commercial artist. He became a full time artist in 1940, and in 1949, he was awarded a grant by the Dutch government for a three year art scholarship in The Netherlands. Upon his return, he was noticed by then President Sukarno, a powerful and influential arts patron, and was appointed as the curator to the presidential collection. Lee drew inspiration from Balinese subjects and he did a series of large paintings depicting various activities in Bali’s daily life which are remarkable. After the fall of Sukarno, Fong retreated into private life until his death in 1988.
Leo Mean aka. Liu Min 刘敏 (b. 1982)
Liu Min was born in 1982, China. He graduated from Hubei Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Oil painting in 2005. That same year, his works qualified for the 2005 Changzhou International Animation Festival as well as the 10th Hong Kong Indpendent Short Film and Video Awards Festival. A year earlier, his work “1314” had qualified for the 2004 CCGF Cartoon Profession. He held his first and second solo exhibitions at the Beijing Tokyo Art Projects in 2007 and 2008. In 2008, he participated in the “Hanging in Sky Drifting on Surface” exhibition held in the 798 Art District in Beijing, China.
Li Chen李真(b. 1963)
Li Chen was born in Yun Lin, Taiwan in 1963. He gained critical acclaim at his first solo exhibition in 1999. Since then, he has participated in numerous international Art shows such as the 2000 International 20th Century Arts Fair, New York, USA and OPENASIA 2004, the 7th International Exhibition of Sculptures and Installations in Venice. Until today, he has held exhibitions in New York, Chicago, Miami, Huston, Paris, London, Geneva, Venice, Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore, and Taipei.
Li Ji 李季 (b. 1963)
Li Ji was born 1963 in Hunming, Yunnan province, China. He graduated from the Sichuan Art Academy in 1987 and completed his graduate studies at the Printing Department of the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing in 1990. Li Ji’s works have been exhibited internationally and acquired by private and public collections in the United States, Europe and Asia. He is currently vice professor of the Yunnan Art Academy.
Liang Yifen 梁奕焚 (b. 1937)
Liang Yifen was born in 1937, in Feng-yuan of Chang-hua County in Taiwan. He graduated from Taipei Teaching College majoring in fine arts. Liang studied modern art under Li Chung Sheng, a celebrated artist in Taiwan, from 1958 to 1963. Liang held his first solo exhibition at the Taipei American Cultural Centre gallery in 1973, and since then, he held solo exhibitions annually, setting up a work studio in New York and holding exhibitions throughout the United States. Liang returned to Taiwan in 1999, and held a solo exhibition of large-scale paintings at Taichung Harbour Area Art Centre in 2003. Liang’s works are collected by a large number of private collectors and have been shown in over 150 exhibitions worldwide.
Liu Baoliang刘宝亮 (b. 1980)
Liu Baoliang was born 1980 in Shen Yang, China. In 2003, he enrolled in the Central Academy of Fine Arts to learn sculpture and graduated in 2007. He won the First prize for the Best Work of the Year in 2005 and 2006 at the academy, and for his 2007 graduation piece, he was awarded the Best Work of the Year. A talented sculptor, Liu Baoliang has held solo exhibitions featuring his mixed media human sculptures in China and in 1997, was involved in art shows held in Finland and Germany.
Liu Guoqiang 刘国强 (b. 1962)
Liu Guoqiang was born in Cangzhou, Hebei province, China. He began his art training in 1968, and from 1977 to 1987 at the Hebei art school located at Hebei Normal College. In 1992, he moved to the artist village at Yuanming Garden in Beijing, and subsequently moved to the Songjiazhuan Artist village in Beijing. He has participated in numerous art events in China including the 2001 “China International Art Expo” held at the China international Exhibition Center in Beijing, China.
Liu Jia刘佳 (b.1982)
Liu Jia was born 182 in Chongqing, China. He graduated in 2007 from the Department of Sculpture at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. Even before his graduation, he participated in numerous exhibitions both locally and overseas. In 2004, he won first prize at the National college student Art Festival exhibition, awarded first prize held in Beijing. Since then, he has participated in international art exhibitions and events held in Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, France and Hong Kong. In 2008, he held a solo sculpture show entitled “Legend” at the Shanghai Art Museum in China. His works were collected by French Ies Abattoirs, Toulouse museum, Shenzhen museum, shanghai city sculpture center, contemporary artist institution.
Liu Yujun 刘玉君 (b. 1963)
Liu Yujun was born in Hebei, China and he graduated from the Tian Jing Fine Arts Academy in 1989. He is known for painting faces of beautiful women combining the essence of the traditional Chinese beauty together with the modernity of contemporary Chinese women. He has participated in numerous international art exhibitions including “China and USA: Art Communication” in New York, USA 1998; the Asia Contemporary Art Exhibition in Italy, 2004 and the Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition in Germany, 2004.
Locatelli Romulado (1905 - 1943)
Locatelli was born 1905 in Italy. His father, Luigi was also an artist. Having graduated from Carrara Art Academy in Bergamo, Italy , Locatelli was regarded a very successful artists, counting powerful personages such the Pope and Mussolini among his patrons. He was famous for his work in Italian portraiture. In 1938, he visited Indonesia, staged an exhibition in Bandung and drew much artistic inspiration during his stay in Bali. With the onset of WW2, he cut short his sojourn in Bali and left for Manila where tragically most of his works were destroyed during a fire. Locatelli vanished without a trace in Manila in 1943.
LU Hao 卢昊 (b.1969)
Lu Hao was born 1969 in Beijing, China. In 1992, Lu Hao graduated from the Central Academy of Fines Arts, Beijing, China. He has held solo exhibitions in Beijing, China ; Seoul, South Korea; Shenzhen, China; Hong Kong, China; New York, U.S.A and Tokyo, Japan. Group Exhibitions include the “Mahjong China Contemporary Art from the Sigg Collection” held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Hamburg, Germany and the prestigious Pusan Biennale in South Korea.
Luo Brothers
The Luo brothers were born in China, and they have had had huge critical and commercial success with their unique paintings and sculptures since they began their collaboration in 1986. Drawing inspiration from Chinese New Year poster arts of yester years. The trio is made up of Luo Weidong, Luo Weiguo and Luo Weibing. Together they have held solo and participated in group exhibitions all over the world including France, Italy, Korea, USA, Netherlands, Croatia, Spain, UK, Brazil, Switzerland, Canada and Australia. Luo Zhenhong 羅振鴻 (b.1981)
Luo Zhenhong was born 1981 in Fujian, China. He graduated in 2005 from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. The sculptor’s most fascinating work is the Dwarf series, which features diminutive figures from various professions, all possess a whimsical large head on a small figure. In 2002, he was involved in the opening of Chongqing Art Museum entitled “Experimentation of Art Education” in Chongqing, China. Since then, he has taken part in exhibitions held across China, Hong Kong and Denmark.
Luo Zhongli 罗中立 (b. 1948)
Luo Zhongli was born 1948 in Chongqing, China. Luo Zhongli is well known for his masterful portraits of the people of southwestern China. His portrait, "Father," is one of the best-known works in modern Chinese contemporary art. He graduated in 1982 from Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Art Institute, and he studied in the Antwerp Royal Art Institute in Belgium from 1983 to 1986. He currently is the dean and professor of Sichuan Art Institute. His works has been shown at solo and group exhibitions all over the world since 1985.
Manuel Baldemor (b. 1947)
Manuel Baldeor was born 1947 in Paete, Laguna, Philippines. He graduated from the College of Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. Manuel D. Baldemor is a multi-talented Filipino artist. He is a painter, sculptor, printmaker, writer and book illustrator. Baldemor has held numerous solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in the Philippines as well as overseas in Seoul, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Spain, Munich, Berlin, Eastern Europe, France, Austria, Poland, Amsterdam, United Kingdom and USA. He has received 24 local and international awards and grants and has been chosen artist-in-residence in Singapore, Japan, Israel, Chile, Portugal, Estonia and Switzerland.
Mario Blanco (b. 1962)
Mario Blanco was born in 1962 in Bali, Indonesia to very famous parents. His art was heavily influenced and nurtured by his parent since childhood. His mother was a famous Balinese dancer, who imparted in him a native artistic sensitivity, while his faher was the famous Spanish artist, Don Antonio Blanco who taught him European art style. Since 1983, he studied art acedamically, finally graduating from Udayana University in Denpasar, Bali. In 2005, Indonesia Tatler named him the best Indonesian artist, and in 2007, he received the prestigious Kria Patra Cihna Yasa Awarded by the King of Denpasar, Bali. Presently, he is the director of the “Blanco Renaissance Museum” in Bali.
Maung Myint Aung (b. 1958)
Maung Myint Aung was born 1958 in Myanmar. He studied art at the State Scool of Fine Arts and graduated in 1983. Since then, he worked as a full time artist and illustrator. Maung’s key subjects are fat women in his paintings. This obese figures possess a tiny head on a huge distended torso, and are rendered in striking colors. He had his first solo exhibition entitled “Distortion and Obesity” in 2003 in Yangon, and the following solo show in 2003 entitled “Self awareness”, also in Yangon. He has also exhibited in Thailand and Singapore.
Ming Jing 明镜 (b. 1960)
Ming Jing was born 1960 in Baoding, Hebei province, China. He graduated from the Decorative Arts Faculty of Tianjin Fine Art Academy. He now works as a professor at Hebei University’s Art College teaching a postgraduate course on Fine Art. He is currently a director of the China Oil Painting Association. He won awards at the 9th and 10th National Fine Art Exhibition, and received another at the “Towards a New Century – Chinese Young Artists’ Oil Painting Exhibition”.
Mochtar Apin (b. 1923 – 1994)
Mochtar Apin was born 1923 in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra. He was among the first who benefited from a Dutch formal education during the colonial period and was able to acquire a strong intellectual basis for producing modern art. From a very young age, he was able to nurture his artistic bent through special instruction from Dutch art teachers. He went on to pursue art at the Kunstnijverheid School in Amsterdam, and the Ecole Nationale Suprieure des Beaux Arts in Paris as well as the Deutsche Akademie der Kuenste in Berlin. Due to his extensive art studies, Mochtar Apin became proficient in a variety of techniques. With such knowledge, he was well equipped to debate on the role of art in Indonesia. In the Indonesian art world, Mochtar Apin’s diverse range of interests and unique versatility in style has left behind an artistic legacy that has held the interest of art connoisseurs to this day.
Mu Jun 母军 (b. 1964)
Mu Jun was born in 1964 in Qinghuangdao in the Hebei province of China, he now lives and works in Songzhuang Village in Beijing. Mu is best known for his series of paintings titled Make up. He has exhibited in many group exhibitions in Singapore, China and Netherlands. His 2 solo exhibitions were held in Beijing namely “Play-Trousseau” in 2006, and “Make-Oneself-Up-and-Go-on-Stage” in 2005.
Nano Warsono (b. 1976)
Nano Warsono was born 1976 in Jepara, Central Java. He graduated from the Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta in 2002, where he studied sculpture. Nano is a comic book artist, as well as a freelance illustrator. He has participated in the following exhibitions: Age-hibition at the Edwin Gallery in Jakarta, Zero at Bentara Budaya in Yogyakarta, Kabinet Komikindie at the Gelaran Budaya in Yogyakarta, and Manusia Dalam Komunokasi Semu at the di Galeri Embun. He presently lectures at ISI, Yogyakarta.
Nyoman Gunarsa (b. 1944)
Nyoman Gunarsa was born 1944 in Banda, Klung Klung Province in Indonesia. He is a world recognized identity in Indonesian Art and one of Bali’s most renowned resident artists. He has achieved enormous critical acclaim through exhibitions, museums and institutions worldwide and continues to dedicate his life and work to Bali. Gunarsa became a lecturer at Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta in the 1980’s when abstract expressionism fever originated from this alumnus. Today Gunarsa is still an energetic painter, based at his outdoor studio in Banda, Klungkung, adjoining one of the two fine art museums he founded (the other is the Museum of Indonesian Contemporary Art in Yogyakarta.
Oscar Salita
Oscar Salita was born 1943 in Pilippines. He is considered one of the popular Filipino artists and his folk artworks are cherished by collectors in Philippines and abroad. Salita’s works are very distinctive - his figures and backgrounds speak of traditional Filipino culture and they are rendered in bold colors and interesting geometry. Salita has enjoyed huge success in his career; his work has reached the US and many prominent cities around the world making him an important and highly prized artist.
Pan De Hai 潘德海 (b. 1956)
Pan Dehai was born in 1956 in Si Ping City, Jilin Province, China. He graduated from the Fine Art Department of the Northeast Normal University in Changchun, Jilin Province in 1982. His paintings are dominated by porcine caricatures of Chinese leaders and people. In contrast to Botero’s obese figures, Pan De Hai’s rotund subjects bear a somewhat sinister undertone due to their homogeneity. According to the artist “Fatness is what I want to express. It is a phenomenon that long exists in today’s society, an outcome of modernization, an expression that most manifests cities, a problem that individual might face to in their everyday life. It is invasive, possessive. A trait that best describes human’s desire.” He has participated in numerous exhibitions held in China, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Italy, Australia and Singapore.
Pang Yong Jie 庞永杰 (b. 1968)
Born 1968 in Shangdong Province,China. He graduated in 1990 from the Shandong Normal University’s College of Fine Arts, and in subsequent years researched at the prestiquious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.For this artist, “Art is a religion”, a form of “spiritual redemption”. Pang’s women are pampered voluptuous sirens whose vast nakedness are rendered in expansive broad strokes from his palette. He has exhibited in group and solo shows in China, Japan, Taiwan, Hongkong and Europe. The artist presently works and resides in Beijing, China.
Payab Suparatkanon (b. 1969)
Payab Suparatkanon was born in Thailand. Born in a well-to-do family, he developed a keen interest in art, and sought apprenticeship under the renowned hyper-realist painter, Rearngsak Boonyavanishkul, famous as a royal Thai court painter, and for his oil paintings depicting Thai court dancers. Payab is inspired by the beauty of the myriad shapes, textures and colors of shells, sea worn pebbles and dead corals found at Thailand’s beaches. His well-received works are in private collections in South East Asia and Europe. He has taken part in numerous group shows in major galleries in Bangkok, Thailand.
Ponk-Q Harry Purnomo (b. 1970)
Ponk-Q Harry Purnomo was born 1970 in Jakarta, Indonesia. He studied art at the Visual Arts department at the Art Institute of Jakarta. His first group show was held at the Visual Arts Exhibition Hall IKJ in 1993. Since then he has participated in several group shows held in Indonesia and most recently at the 2008 Singapore Art Exhibition in Singapore. He had held two solo shows in 2002 and 2007. He received the Best Paper Award IKJ Visual Arts in 1995, and was a finalist at the 2001 Philip Morris Singapore Art Awards and the 2006 Jakarta Art Awards.
Popo Iskandar (1927 - 2000)
Born in 1927, Garut, West Java, Popo Iskandar began painting in 1944 as a poster painter for the Information Service of Indonesian Students Armed Force (TRIP). He graduated from the Bandung Institute of Technology, Department of Fine Arts in 1958. A lecturer at the State Teachers Trainings College in Bandung, Popo not just an artist, but a well-respected intellect, art critic and observer. In 1970, he was awarded life membership by the Jakarta Academy for his dedication and contributions to the arts. Since 1953, Popo has participated in many group exhibitions held in China, England, India, Japan, Holland and USA as well as solo shows in Indonesia and Holland.
Putu Sutawijaya (b. 1973)
Putu Sutawijaya was born 1973 in Angseri, Tabanan, Bali. He completed his art studies at the faculty of Fine Arts at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta in 1998. At the Philip Morris Indonesia Art Awards 1999, he was among the top ten winners. A year later, he received the prestigious Lempad Prize for his work from Sangar Dewata Indonesia (SDI) in Yogyajarta. Currently, he owns 2 studios in Yogyakarta and Bali. Putu Sutawijaya’s work expresses the view that “clothing conceals human expression and emotion”, so his subjects are shown naked and also faceless. The various movements of the human form give life to his work. Putu Sutawijaya has held solo exhibitions in Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Qi Zhilong 祁志龙 (b. 1962)
Qi Zhilong was born 1962 in Huhehot, Inner Mongolia Autonomous region. In 1987, Qi graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Later in 1992, he moved to the Artist village located at Yuanming garden. He is a prominent painter who is known for his political pop images, mostly of Chinese women during the Cultural Revolution. His works are somewhat plain and realistic, but almost sweet representations of pig tailed women from the 1950s and 1960s and people in the 1970s and 1980s.
Ramon Orlina (b. 1944)
Ramon was born 1944 in Manila, Philippines. He is a sculptor and an architect who created sculptural form in glass as a medium. His artworks consist of glass murals, table sculptures within an architectural setting. Arcanum XIX Paradise Regained, the glass altar and overall sculptural architectural design of the Greenbelt Chapel in Makati City are some of his achievements. A multi-awarded glass sculptor, Orlina has represented the Philippines in Monte Carlo, Japan, Chile, and Taiwan.
Rearngsak Boonyavanishkul (b. 1961)
Rearngsak Boonyavanishkul was born in Singhburi, Thailand in 1961. Since a young age of 7, Rearngsak has been interested in art. He graduated from the Silpakorn University in Bangkok, Thailand with a B.F.A. in Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts in 1986. He won the first prize and was awarded a gold medal for a major art competition in 1985, and has since won several awards in Thailand and Singapore. In 1990, Rearngsak was one of the winners in the Osaka Triennale held in Japan. Rearngsak has gone through numerous international art events including solo and group exhibitions in Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Australia and UK. Rearngsak’ impressive works have been in auctions since 1993 and has been a favourite with ardent collectors around the world.
Redy Rahadian (b. 1973)
Redy Rahadian was born in Cianjur, West Java in 1973. He pursued an education at the Mechanical Department of Saint Joseph Institute in Brussels, Belgium. A gifted sculptor, he won a public sculpture exhibiton in Medan, North Sumatra and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Indonesia.
Ren Jian Hui 任健辉 (b. 1956)
Ren Jian Hui was born in 1956 in Chengdu, China. The artist graduated in 1982 from the China Central College of Arts where Wu Guanzhong was one his lecturer. Ren has held several solo and group exhibitions in China, Japan, New York, Singapore, and Malaysia. His fine technique in creating an illusion with layered hues and texture in painting was inspired by Chinese ancient “Dun Huang” mural painting of Tang Dynasty. He has held key positions in several artists’ association including Singapore Nanyang Artist Association. He has also lectured art at Central Technology Art College and National University of Singapore.
Ren Si Hong 任思鸿 (b. 1967)
Ren Si Hong was born 1967 in China. He graduated in 1991 from the Hebei Normal College, Fine Art Department in 1991. He held his first solo exhibition in 1993 at the Central Academy’s gallery. His sculptures are directly influenced by his childhood experiences under Chairman Mao’s indoctrination of the school children, especially with regards to collective exercises with monotonous commands issuing from a PA system. His works were exhibited in China’s Ten Contemporary Artist Oil Painting Exhibition in Qingdao Province (2004), “She Shi Dai” (Luxury Times) Sculpture Exhibition in Tianjin(2005), “Beijing Artistic Literature Exhibition” in Beijing(2005) and “Made in China” Exhibition in Italy (2006) etc.
Sheng Qi 盛奇 (b. 1964)
Sheng Qi was born 1964 in Hefei, China. He graduated in 1988 from the Central Academy of Art and Design located in Beijing, China. From 1989 to 1992, he worked in Italy and in 1998, he graduated with a Master’s degree from the Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. Presently the artist resides and works in Beijing. He has participated in numerous exhibitions held in China and abroad in Melbourne (Australia), Tokyo (Japan), Oxford (UK) and Mexico City (USA).
Shi Hu 石虎 (b. 1942)
Shi Hu was born 1942 in Yu Shui, Ho Bei Province, China. Shi Hu came from a very humble background, and did not received an art education like most of his peers. As a child, he taught himself art and was relentlessly committed to his love for art. His breakthrough came when he had the opportunity to represent his country to visit the African states. The following year, he published his African sketches which received critical acclaim from the Chinese fine arts society. Since then, he continued to exhibit his works in the States, Singapore and other cities in Asia. Its been said that Shi Hu’s art is the embodiment of conflict and that his love of Chinese art is unrivalled. Shi Hu is a rebelious artist whose works embody the duality of distancing himself from tradition while returning to the origins. In his paintings, Shi Hu combines Western oil with Chinese Ink painting to create his own style.
Shi Lifeng 石立峰 (b. 1968)
Shi Lifeng was born 1968 in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, China. He graduated from the Hebei Normal University. Shi Lifeng currently lives and works in Beijing. His series “Red Person” is a commentary on the helplessness of people living on the edge of society. Shi Lifeng' work has been collected by both public institutions and private collectors from Beijing and Shanghai. He has participated in group exhibitions held in Sweden, China, Switzerland, Denmark, England, France and the Netherlands.
Siew Hock Meng (b. 1942)
Siew Hock Meng was born 1942 in Singapore. At age 16, he enrolled at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts but left after a year to become a rubber tapper in Malaya. In 1975, he returned to Singapore and founded an art gallery and later became a full time artist. Siew Hock Meng became one of the most important artists in South-East Asia particularly for his beautiful works in pastel. Held first retrospective exhibition in Art Retreat, a private museum in 2004. His work is represented in the Singapore Art Museum, corporate and private collections.
Song Yonghong 宋永红 (b. 1966)
Song Yonghong was born 1966 in Hebei province, China. He graduated from the Department of Printmaking, at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in 1988. In 1988, he lectured at the Beijing Art & Craft College, and since 1997, has worked as a full time professional artist. He has held several solo and group shows in China and abroad, the most recent was a solo exhibition at the Guangdong Museum of Art in 2008.
Su Xinping 苏新平 (b. 1960)
Su Xinping was born 1960 in Jining, Inner Mongolia in China. He graduated from the Painting Department, Tianjin Institute of Fine Arts in 1983. Su obtained his Master Degree in Print-making from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. Currently he works as Deputy Professor and Deputy Head of Department of Printmaking at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Sujana Kerton (b. 1922 – 1994)
Sujana Kerton was born 1922 in Bandung, West Java. In 1950, he was awarded with a scholarship to study in Amsterdam, Holland after which he continued his art education at the Academie de Grande Chaumiere in Paris, France. In 1952, he enrolled at the Art Students League in New York, USA and from 1962 to 1963, he studied mural painting in Mexico. He returned to Indonesia in 1976 after 25 years abroad. A major retrospective exhibition of Kerton’s work was held in Jakarta in 1996 after his passing in 1994.
Sompop Budtarad (b.1957)
Sompop Budtarad was born in 1957 in Mahasarakham, Thailand. He graduated from Silpakorn Uiversity in Bangkok with a B.F.A specialising in painting. From 1986 to 1992, Sompop worked in England on the Mural Painting Project of Buddhapadipa Thai Temple in London. Sompop also won awards including the prize winning sculpture at “The Art Show” of John Jones Open Show in London. Sompop participated in numerous group exhibitions in Thailand, United States, England, and Japan. He held his first solo exhibition “Grace and The Rising of the Mind” in the Visual Dhamma Gallery of Bangkok in 1995.
Sui Jianguo 隋建国 (b. 1956)
Sui Jianguo was born 1956, Qing Dao, China. One of the leading contemporary Chinese artists in China today. Sui Jianguo was born in an ordinary workers' family where none of his parents were ever in school. As an artist, he gravitated towards sculpture and working hard heavy materials such as granite and metals. He has toured extensively & held numerous solo shows in China, Australia, India, Taiwan as well as USA. A professor and head of the Department of Sculpture at the distinguished Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, he has brought crucial changes to the contemporary art movement in China. Due to his inspiring works and educational efforts, abstract and conceptual sculpture has become well accepted by the ordinary Chinese people and by the Chinese authorities.
Sun Man 孙蛮 (b. 1968)
Sun Man was born 1968 in Xi’an, China. She graduated from Canvas Department, Xi’an Art College in 1994 with a Master Degree. In 2000, she enrolled in the Advance Study Class of the Canvas Department at Central Art College and graduated in 2003. Her paintings show modern women's feelings and thoughts towards emotions and life. Sun Man's works are subtly femininely and sensitive. She is currently an Associate Professor at Xi’an Art College. Her works have been exhibited in various group shows in Beijing and in 1999, she was involved in "Goodbye, Old Campus" and so on in Paris Art City - Nine Person Associated Exhibition held in Paris, France.
Suraji (b. 1971)
Suraji was born 1971 in Bantul, Yogyakarta. He graduated from the Faulty of Fine Arts at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta in 2001. He has won numerous awards for his works at events held in Indonesia and abroad, such as the Osaka Triennal, the 2002 and 2003 Indo Art Awards and the Hyogo International Competition of Painting, Japan in 2005. Suraji is deeply concerned with socio-political issues in his country. Since the mid-1998 he has been taking political intrigues and their effects as significant subject matters for his painting. With rich interesting visual forms, Suraji brings to life the realities of daily life, glodablization, industrialization and modernity with his strange menagerie of animals and humanoids.
Takashi Murakami 村上 隆 (b. 1963)
Takashi Murakami was born 1963 in Tokyo, Japan. Murakami attended the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, initially studying more traditional Japanese art. He is a prolific contemporary Japanese artist who works in both fine arts media, such as painting, as well as digital and commercial media. He borrows popular themes from mass media and pop culture, and turns them into huge sculptures, "Superflat" paintings, or marketable commercial goods such as figurines or phone caddies. In 2008, Takashi Murakami made Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People" list, the only visual artist included.
Tan Juat Lee (b. 1953)
Tan Juat Lee was born 1953 in multi-racial Singapore. After completing her BA (Hons) in Nanyang University of Singapore in 1976, she continued a fine art education at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore in 1987. A self-acknowledged romantic realist, she describes her art pieces as Chinese Singaporean with a touch of the current “East Meets West” ideology. She held three solo exhibitions in 198, 2005 and 2007. She won many awards, including Grand Prize in the UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 1997 and 2004, Juror’s Choice in Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards (1997), and First Prize in Dr. Tan Tsze Chor Art Awards in 1998. Her highly personal artworks have been exhibited in Singapore, China, Brunei and Japan.
Tao Na 陶娜 (b. 1980)
Tao Na was born 1980 in Hunan, China. She graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing with a bachelor’s degree in 2005, and later with a MFA in 2008. Tao Na is known for her distinctive style of rendering her subjects in an innovative mosaic-like painting and crafting technique. She has participated in exhibitions and art fairs held in Singapore, USA, Switzerland as well as China. Most recently, her works were showcased at the Art Asia Miami held at Miami, USA.
Terra Bajraghosa (b. 1981)
Terra Bajraghosa was born 1981 in Yogakarta. He received his formal art education in Visual Communication Design at the Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta from 1999 to 2005. Terra Bajraghosa presently lives in Yogjakarta, Indonesia and teaches at ISI. He was one of the finalists for the Soverign Art Foundation Asia prize held in 2008. He held his first solo show in Yogyakarta entitled “Robot Goblokisme” in 206, and has participated in group exhibitions held in Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta as well as abroad in Korea and UK.
Tisna Sanjaya (b. 1958)
Tisna Sanjaya was born 1958 in Bandung, West Java. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1986. He went on to finish his Post-Graduate studies at DAAD Stipendium, Germany in 1998. He came in Top 10 at the Philip Morris Indonesia Art Awards in 1995 and 1997. Prevalent themes in his works include problems of humanity, social concerns as well as politics. He has held numerous exhibitions abroad in Singapore, Korea, India, The Netherlands and Italy. He now teaches at the Bandung Institute of Technology, which makes him a civil servant and government employee, a status that he often uses as a satiric, ironical tool in his performance and installation works.
Tommy Wondra (b. 1980)
Tommy was born 1980 in Bukit Tinggi, Indonesia. He graduated from the Indonesian Art Institute at Yogyakarta. Stones feature heavily in Tommy’s paintings. The artist paints stones out of a desire to know the “form of God”. To him, stones have no fixed definite form even though they can be found everywhere, and thus God is probably like stones, having no distinct form. His group exhibitions have been held in Yogyakarta, Bandung, East Java, and Bali. He has also received a Phillip Morris Indonesian Art Award in 1998 while in Jakarta.
Trubus Soedarsono (b. 1926 - 1966)
Trubus Soedarsono was born 192 in Indonesia. During the Japanese occupation, from 1942 til 1945, Trubus studied painting from the masters, Sudjojono and Affandi in Jakarta. Later he became a lecturer at Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts from 1950 to 1960. His works were very popular and his patrons include President Sukarno of Indonesia. His oil paintings often featured ethereal, impressionistic images of Indonesian dance and culture. The artist was also a member of Painters of the People (Pelukis Rakyat). Trubus Soedarsono passed away during the purges that followed the aborted communist coup in September, 1966.
Ugo Untoto (b. 1970)
Ugo Untoro was born 1970 at Purbalingga, Central Java, Indonesia. He graduated from the School of Painting of the Indoneasian Institute of Arts (ISI) at Yogyakarta in 1995. The artist has a deep affinity for horses, and features them as subjects in many of his bold, stirringly simple and powerful paintings as well as 3-dimensional works. Since then, he has had more than 10 solo exhibitions in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. He has participated in many group exhibitions, including the Best of the Philip Morris Art Awards 1994 & 1998, the CP Art Space of Washington, USA, and the Indonesian Biennals of Jakarta and Yogyakarta since 1996. Ugo Untoro is also a founder of Museum dan Tanah Liat, a multi art disciplinary Contemporary Art Gallery, located in Yojyakarta, Indonesia.
Utomo S. (b.1958)
Utomo S. was born in West Java, Indonesia. He studied art at the Universitas Parahyangan at Bandung, Indonesia before leaving for Germany to pursue a full artist career. In 1986, he graduated from the Fachnocnschule Hamburg Fachbereich Gestaltung. He continued living in Germany for the next 20 years, and was involved in several exhibitions held all over Germany.
Wahyu Srikaryadi (b. 1967)
Wahyu Srikaryadi was born 1967 in Bandung, West Java. The artist studied art with the guidance of Balinese senior artists Barli Sastrawinata and Miyoshi. Wahyu regularly paints female figures in a traditional manner for his works. Since 1984, he held exhibitions in Bandung, Jakarta, Bali, and the Netherlands.
Walasse Ting 丁雄泉 (b. 1929)
Walasse Ting was born in Wuxi, China in 1929, but raised in Shanghai. He began his career painting on sidewalks. In 1952 he moved to Paris where he was exposed to Western art, in particularly the Expressionist movement and the works of Picasso. In 1960, Ting emigrated to New York, where he became involved with pop artists and was influence by Figuratism or Representational Art. Ting's works are a rich kaleidoscope of bright, luminous colors with 19th century sensuality. Freshness, vitality and brilliant color characterizes Wallase Ting's women, flowers, birds and animals. He has had more than 60 solo exhibitions in major art galleries and museums around the world, including: New York, Paris, Zurich, Brussels, Amsterdam, Munich, Copenhagen, Vienna, Milan, Taipei, Tokyo, Singapore, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
Wang Jin 王瑾 (b. 1982)
Wang jin was born 1982 in China. She graduated from the prestigious China Academy of Fine Arts in 2005. Her love for dogs shows itself in her quirky yet naturalistic paintings of man’s best friends dressed in a variety of costumes. In 2008, she participated in a large scale group exhibition entitled “Surfing Animamix” held in Shanghai, China and later in Singapore. She also exhibited at the First Annual Moon River Sculpture Festival held in Beijing, China in 2008.
Willem Dooijewaard (b. 1892 – 1980)
Willen Dooijewaard was born 1892 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The artist pursued an art education at the Amsterdam Arts and Crafts School. In 1913, he left for Sumatra to work at a plantation. In 1919, he met Roland Strasser, a fellow Austrain artist in Bali. Both men then travelled through Asia and Africa to paint and experience the varied culture. Most of his works were painted during his adventures.
Wu Dinglong 吴定隆 (b. 1982)
Wu Dinglong was born 1982 in Sichuan province, China. He was involved in numerous group exhibition held in Chengdu, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Dali and Hong Kong. In 2008, he participated in “Surfing Animamix” held in Shanghai, China. Exhibition venues include 1) Shanghai MOCA Contemporary Art Museum 2) The Liu Hai Su Art Museum 3) Chengdu Szechuan Art Museum and 4) Beijing Moon River Contemporary Art Museum.
Wu Jianjun 吴建军 (b. 1966)
Wu Jianjun was born 1966 in Sichuan province, China. He graduated from Sichuan Fine Art Institute in Chongqing. Wu Jianjun has always been passionate and amazed by the physique of human body. In his paintings, he transforms psychological turmoil onto his canvases, capturing a wide intensity of emotion and facets of the inner life of himself and others. He has held two solo shows to date; “Body Pattern” in Beijing, 2006 and “Metamorphosis” in Singapore, 2008. He has participated in numerous group shows in Indonesia, Italy, Holland, China, Korea and United Kingdom.
Wu Mingzhong 武明中 (b.1963)
Wu Mingzhong was born 1963 in Hebei province China. He is currently an associate professor and Director of the Oil Painting department at College of Fine Arts, Capital Normal University. He was a visiting scholar of Liebin Academy of Fine Arts in Russia, and Buffalo State College in the USA. He has been involved in numerous exhibitions including: “Juxtapositions-Seven Paint- ers” in Beijing, 1999; “The Academic Exhibition of Beijing Oil Painting” in Beijing, 2000; “Chinese Art Today” in Beijing, 2003; “Born in China – Chinese Contemporary Art” in New York, 2005; “37 Basel International Contemporary Art Fair in Switzerland, 2006 and “The Thermocline – New Asian Waves” held in Germany, 2007.
Xiao Hong 肖红 (b. 1966)
Xiao Hong was born 1966 in Inner Mongolia, China. He graduated in 1990 from the Oil Painting Department of Inter-Mongolia Normal University. In 1991, he studied at the “Claude Yeevier” Realistic Oil Painting class held in Lu Xun Art Institute and later enrolled at the Central Arts and Craft Institute in Beijing to study mural painting history. Xiao Hong’s signature style of piecing together various images onto the contours of a human face is memorable. His first solo exhibition was held in 1999 in Beijing and subsequent shows were held in Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia. He was also involved in group exhibitions held in France, Japan, China and Indonesia.
Xin Dongwang 忻东旺 (b. 1963)
Xin Dongwang was born 1963 in He-Bei, China. He graduated from the Art Department of Shan-Shi Jinzhong Teachers College in 1988, and in 2003 finished the various courses in the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Art and Design. Currently, Xin works as an associate professor in the Painting Department in the Art School of Tsing-Hua University. The multi-award winning artist has exhibited at “the 3rd China Oil Painting Exhibition, "the 1st Exhibition of Chinese Oil Painting Society", "To the New Age- Chinese Youth Oil Painting Exhibition, "the 9th National Arts Exhibition", "National Artistic Work Exhibition for the 80th anniversary of the Communist Party", "the 3rd Oil Painting Exhibtion", "the 1st Beijing Biennale International Exhibition", and "the 10th National Arts Exhibition".
Xue Song 薛松 (b. 1965)
Xue Song was born 1965 in Anhui, China. He graduated from the Stage Art Department of the Shanghai Drama Institute in 1988. A turning point in Xue Song’s artistic career came when his art studio was burned down, and in the process all his works were destroyed. Xue Song then experienced an artistic epiphany while picking up the torn and burnt pieces of his former works. He began creating pictures by using pieces of burnt paper. Now a highly regarded Contemporary Artist, Xue Song has held more than 20 successful solo exhibitions in countries such as China, Singapore, UK, USA and Germany.
Yan Bo 闫博 (b. 1970)
Yan Bo was born 1970 to artist parents in Beijing, China. He graduated in 1996 from the Tianjin Fine Art Academy. In 2002, he obtained a Masters degree at the Central Fine Art Academy in Beijing. Yan Bo’s paintings exude warmth and happiness and are filled with bright colors and bold strokes. He received his first award at the Sino-Japanese Fine Arts Exhibition held in Beijing in 1991. His solo exhibition entitled “The Bright Side of Life” was held in Singapore, Indonesia and China in 2007. He has involved in numerous exhibitions held in Singapore, Indonesia, Hongkong, China and Taiwan.
Yang Fan 杨帆 (b. 1972)
Yang Fan was born 1972 in Jieyang, Guangdong province, China, Ynag Fan graduated from the Department of Printmaking at the Guangzhou Academy of Art. She started teaching at the Guangdong Education Institute in the Fine Arts Department in 1996. Her paintings revolve around the themes concerning the consumerism of women in ‘capitalist’ China, reflecting on their indulgence in material comforts and lifestyles. In 2003, she was awarded Bronze Price in 2nd Guangdong Contemporary Oil Painting Exhibition. Yang Fan has participated in solo and group exhibitions in many parts of China as well as Singapore and Italy.
Yang Jin Song 杨劲松 (b. 1971)
Yang Jinsong was born 1971 in Chongqing, China. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Academy with an Masters of Fine Arts Degree. Jinsong’s paintings are windows into the artist’s soul, as they seemed to be very intimate and personal views of his world, like visual journals detailing the everyday objects that fill his life. He has held several solo exhibitions in China and countries such as Germany, Australia, Indonesia and Singapore. He also participated in group exhibitions showcased at art museums and galleries in China, Indonesia, Austria, Hungary, Korea, USA and Italy.
Yang Liming 杨黎明 (b. 1975)
Yang Liming was born 1975 in Sichuan province, China. In 1999, he graduated from the Art Collge of Sichuan Normal University with a bachelor’s degree in Oil Painting. Yang Liming’s abstract works can be “read” as autobiographical books filled with running lines reminiscent of EKG lines, which monitors heart beats. He has participated in many group exhibitions and art events in China and abroad, among them: 1) Presentation – Artists Yang Liming and Shi Jindian (2004) in Chengdu, China 2) 'Lineart', Art Show (2005) in Ghent, Belgium 3) Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition (2005) at the Brussels International Art Exposition 4) Bologna International Art Exposition (2006), Italy 5) Melbourne Art Fair 2006, Australia and 6) Art TaiBei Gallery Exhibition (2007), Taiwan. His most recent group effort was at CIGE 2008 held in Beijing, China.
Yang Mian 杨冕 (b. 1970)
Yang Mian was born 1970 in Chengdu, China. He graduated from the Szechuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1997 with a Bachelor’s Degree majoring in Oil Painting. . In 1998 he was received the Contemporary Chinese Art Award from the Chinese Contemporary Art Association. Yang Mian addresses the issue of changing standards that are shaping the face of the social and cultural life in Chinese society using subjects such as women and images from pop culture in his paintings. He has held numerous solo exhibitions in China and overseas in USA, France and Singapore. He was involved in several group exhibitions held overseas in Mexico, Taiwan, Amsterdam and Switzerland among others.
Yang XiaoBing 杨小兵 (b. 1966)
Yang XiaoBing was born 1966 in China. He graduated in 1990 from the Department of Fine Arts of Tianshui Normal Institute, Gansu Province, China. The artist currently lives and works in Beijing. In 2008, he took part in the HongKong International Art Fair. XiaoBing has exhibited extensively, with shows in Beijing, Singapore, Taiwan, Shanghai, Amsterdam and New York.
Yani Halim (b. 1969)
Yani Halim was born 1969 in Nganjuk, Indonesia. He graduated from the Indonesian Institute of Art ISI, Yogyakarta in 1990. He held his first solo show in 1999 at Kedai Kebun, Yogyakarta . He has particpated in a number of group shows since 2005 such as “Aku, Chairil Anwar, dan Aku” in 2005 in Jakarta; “Considering Drawing From Stockroom” in 2006, Bali; “Pameran Postcard” in Surabaya and most recently in 2008, at Jogja Gallery. He was awarded the Lima Besar Seni Lukis Dies Natalies XI ISI Jogja in 1995.
Ye Xianmin 叶献民 (b. 1958)
Ye Xianmin was born 1958 in Guangzhou, China. He started learning to paint in 1972. He received art instruction from several veteran Guangzhou artists; among them: Li Ziqiang and Huang Kunyuan. He is noted for painting Chinese ethnic natives in oil and has won many national awards. Ye is a member of the Chinese Artists Association, deputy director of the Guangzhou Painting Studio, and deputy director of the Guangdong Watercolor Research Society.
Ye Yongqing 叶永青 (b. 1958)
Ye Yongqing was born 1958 in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China, is a pioneering artist who was part of the Sichuan School of artists. Much of his career was spent on painting birds, begun in 2000, which are executed in a signature quirky style featuring scratched black lines using the traditional medium of Chinese brush and ink on rice paper. He also has focused in recent years on creating colorful collages. But for years he has been better known as a curator, arts events organizer and artist community booster. Ye Yongqing is perhaps best known for his bird paintings, These He is a close friend and colleague to artists who worked in western China, particularly Sichuan and Yunnan. Ye Yongqing graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1982. He lives in Beijing and Kunming.
Yin Kun 尹坤 (b. 1969)
Yin Kun was born 1969 in Deyang, Sichuan province, China. He graduated in 1992 from the Fine Arts Department of the ABA Teacher's College, China. He is highly popular for his Chinese baby series which are widely collected around the world. He has held successful solo shows in countries such as China, Indonesia and The Netherlands and participated in many National and International level group shows around the world.
Yue Minjun 岳敏君 (b. 1962)
Yue Minjun was born 1962 in Daqing, Hei Long Jiang Province, China. In 1968, he became a Beijing resident and graduated from Hebei Normal University major in Oil Painting. One of the most successful contemporary Chinese artists of all times. Yue Minjun is internationally famous for his oil paintings which depicts laughing caricatures of himself in various settings. He has since reproduced this signature image in numerous sculptures, watercolor and prints with great success. Yue Minjun has participated in numerous large scale international art events and exhibitions such as the 5th Shanghai Biennale, Mahjon at Kunstmuseum Bern and Xianfeng! at Museum Beelden aan Zee in the Netherlands. In 2007, his piece 'Execution' became the most expensive work ever by a Chinese contemporary artist to date, when it sold for £2.9 million pounds (US $5.9 million) at London's Sotheby's.
Yunizar (b. 1971)
Yunizar was born in 1971 in Talawi, Indonesia. As one of the most distinctive contemporary young artist to emerge from Indonesia, It been said that his works represents the purity and beauty in spontaneous human creativity. He graduated from the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) in Yogyakarta and held his first exhibition in 1994. A year later, he was awarded the Best Art work at Persiminas III held in Jakarta, and in 1998, he came in the Top 10 for the Philip Morris Awards. Since 1994, he has participated in a string of exhibitions held in Indonesia, Singapore and Hongkong.
Yuyu Yang 楊英風 (1926 - 1997)
Yuyu Yang was born in 1926, Yilan, Taiwan. A prominent sculptor in Taiwan and China, he incorporated traditional symbols in Chinese culture to display the duplicity and interaction of opposites in nature. Yang viewed his sculptures as an aesthetic mutual interaction between the work and audience. Yang graduated from the Fu Jen University in Beijing, China. Later, he enrolled at the Tokyo Academy of Architecture, Japan to study architecture. Yang worked with numerous materials for his sculptures including wood, clay, bronze, marble and stainless steel. During the 1990s, he turned almost exclusively to stainless steel to simply and eloquently express the thematic symbols that appear frequently in Chinese philosophy. His work is included in the collections of many prestigious private, corporate, and museum collections such as the Smithsonian Institution in USA, the World Trade Center in Taiwan, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, National Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, Italy and the Vatican City in Rome, Italy.
Zeng Chuanxing 曾传兴 (b. 1974)
Zeng Chuanxing was born 1974 in Longchang County, Sichuan Province. He graduated from the Central University of Nationalities in 1998. Zeng has found his artistic calling in classical realism, through which he thoroughly expresses his feelings about society, individuals and the march towards modernity. Like most artists working in China today, his works are heavily influenced by the changes taking place in China today and dominated by a need to understand the effects of the Cultural Revolution on present-day culture. Since 1996, Zeng has participated in many art shows in China and internationally.
Zeng Lingxin 曾令馨 (b. 1983)
Zeng Lingxin was born 1983 in Chongqing, Sichuan Province in China. She graduated from the oil painting department of Sichuan Fine Art Institute in 2007. Zeng also won awards including the Execellent Prize at the annual exhibition of Sichuan Fine Art Institute. She has participated in many exhibitions since 2007, in countries including China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Switzerland.
Zhang Shuang 張霜 (b. 1972)
Zhag Shuang was born 1972 in Chengdu, China. In 1994, she graduated from the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts, Qinghua University Fine Arts Institute majoring in The Design of Packaging Bachelor Degree. In 1998, Zhang Shuang began teaching at the Chengdu Fine Arts Institute. Zhang Shuang excels in symphonic compositions of pencil, watercolor, charcoal and ink on paper to depict forlorn doe-eyed female figures in often surreal settings. She has had 2 solo exhibitions to date both held in China. Since 2001, she has been involved in group exhibitions in China as well as in Singapore, Mexico, Korea, USA.
Zhao Nengzhi 赵能智 (b. 1968)
Zhao Nengzhi was born 1968, Nanchong, Sichuan Province, China. He is a graduate of Sichuan Institute of Fine Arts. He has participated in countless solo and group exhibitions as well as Art fairs abroad in countries such as Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, USA, Austria, Thailand, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, England, USA and France. His paintings are distinctive and instantly recognizable. The subjects in his works often seemed anguished and tortured, their emotions naked and exposed, sometimes even appearing as if they have been skinned. The artist currently lives and works in Chengdu, Beijing.
Zheng Delong 郑德龙 (b. 1976)
Zheng Delong was born 1976 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. Zheng Delong was an untrained artist and received no formal art education before he embarked on his artistic career. He was profoundly influenced by the ancient Chinese theory about the five elements – wood, fire, metal, earth and water, which he explores in his unusual yet visually powerfully paintings. Zhong Biao 鍾飆 (b. 1968)
Zhong Biao was born 1968 in Chongqing, Sichuan Province, China. He studied Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (China Academy) Hangzhou, China. Zhong Bao recognized as one of the most unusual and modern figures among contemporary China’s artist because his works involves a blend of Asian and Western cultures. His realistic often large paintings create narratives between opposing images, realities and clashing contrast between the old and new. One of Zhong Biao’s first exhibitions was in 1990 held in Tokyo, Japan. Since then, he has participated in shows held in China, Hong Kong, USA, Germany, Belgium, Thailand, Korea and Singapore.
Zhou Chunya 周春芽 (b. 1955)
Zhou Chunya was born 1955 at Chongqing, Sichuan Province, China. In 1982, he graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts and in 1988, he studied at the Kassel Academy of Fine Art, Kassel, Germany in the Experiment Art Department. The artist is best known for his colorful “green dog” series of paintings as well as sculptures of dogs in metal and industrial paint. Considered as one of the country’s most talented painters of nature and rural scenes, Zhou Chunya’s works have been widely exhibited in solo and group shows in Singapore, China, France, Ireland, Italy, USA, Germany, Austria and London.
Zhu Wei 朱伟 (b. 1966)
Zhu Wei was born 1966 in Beijing, China. He pursued his art education at the People's Liberation Army Academy of Art, Beijing Film Academy, and the China Institute of Art. Zhu Wei is committed to contemporize Chinese ink and color on paper, and promote it as an important integral of world contemporary art. His ink and wash works have been collected by numerous museums in China and abroad. Zhu Wei made his first debut in the international art scene in 1993, and has put on more than 20 Solo exhibitions ever since.
